Brief: No Charges For Alleged Woodbury Rape Victim

The woman initially told police she was sexually assaulted at a Woodbury park but later said it didn't happen.

Woodbury authorities have opted not to charge the woman who at a city park in April.

“After reviewing the case, we just don’t feel she needs to be charged,” Cmdr. Jay Alberio said on Wednesday, about a week after the police department announced the sexual assault did not happen.

The 33-year-old woman initially told police she was sexually assaulted at while she was jogging at about 5:30 a.m. on April 23, sparking a major investigation. Officers interviewed the woman and those who know her several times before she eventually admitted the incident didn’t occur.

Last week, Alberio said it was with filing a false police report, but added that police would continue to look into the matter. On Wednesday he said the decision to not charge her is final and the important thing for the public to know is that no assault occurred.

“We wanted to reassure local residents, who have expressed concerns about their safety,” Director Lee Vague said in an Aug. 30 statement. “However, as always, residents are encouraged to take personal safety precautions by being aware of their surroundings, traveling in numbers and keeping to well-lighted areas.”
