Updated: Dozens of Crashes Reported in Woodbury, Schools Cancel Some Activities

As wet March snow blankets the city, police encourage drivers to take caution and schools cancel some evening activities.

As the snow continues to come down today, Woodbury traffic Scott Melander has one message for motorists.

“It’s very slippery and icy and slushy out there,” he said. “Basically people are just driving too fast for the conditions.”

Already today there have been about two dozen crashes on Woodbury roads, Melander said.

He was out assisting the State Patrol on a crash on Interstate 94 near Century Avenue when a driver came up behind his squad car, nearly rear-ended him and did three 360-degree spins, Melander said. The driver was able to regain control of her vehicle and no accident occurred.

The National Weather Service is reporting that Woodbury will see up to four inches of snow during the day and continuing until about 7 p.m. There could be another dusting of snow this evening, as well.

Kay Pavel, communications specialist with South Washington County Schools, said all elementary and middle school activities will be canceled today, as well as activity buses. Evening high school activities will proceed as planned, as will evening Community Education programs, including Kids Club, she said.

All students will be dismissed from school at their regularly scheduled times, though it is anticipated that buses will be running late.

Back on Woodbury roads, the snow was predicted, Melander said, but because so much fell so fast it’s difficult for crews to keep up with removal. For the most part, people just need to slow down on Woodbury roads, Melander said.

“The speed limits aren’t set for bad weather. They’re set for good conditions or perfect conditions,” he said.
