Driver Faces Oncoming Traffic After U-Turn on I-494 in Woodbury

The State Patrol did not receive any reports of related crashes, but at least one Woodbury resident quite frightened.

A driver heading south on Interstate 494 near Lake Road in Woodbury on Tuesday night made a U-turn, facing traffic for a time and narrowly missing other motorists.

Woodbury resident Cheryl Anderson came upon the vehicle just as it was beginning to rain.

Anderson said the driver went onto the right shoulder and then swung to make a U-turn across three lanes of traffic, pointing the car northbound toward oncoming traffic in the left lane. He then stopped. She came within inches of hitting the other car at more than 60 mph.

The incident happened at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, according to Lt. Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol. There were no related crashes reported, he said.

After swerving to miss the vehicle, Anderson said she proceeded to the next exit, shaking from the experience, and called police.

She said it was a dark-haired male driver with a blonde-haired female passenger wearing glasses; both appeared to be in their early 20s. The car was silver and resembled a Pontiac. The driver had a blank look on his face and the woman with him looked terrified, she reported.

Anderson remains concerned that the driver is still out on the roads, as the maneuver appeared to be deliberate and not due to loss of vehicular control.
