Kids ‘Caught’ Wearing Helmets Could Get Free Ice Cream

The Woodbury Public Safety Department announced this year's initiative Wednesday.

Safety first. Ice cream second.

The Woodbury Public Safety Department on Wednesday announced a program in which kids who are “caught” wearing a helmet while cycling can get free ice cream.

“Wearing a bicycle helmet is an important safety choice for everyone, especially children,” Lee Vague, Woodbury Public Safety director, said in a release. “This fun program rewards kids who take responsibility for protecting themselves when riding their bikes.”

The Woodbury bike patrol will be out this summer checking for children wearing helmets; some could be rewarded with a coupon for a free ice cream cone.

The program is sponsored by the Woodbury Public Safety Department, in cooperation with Dairy Queen.

The Woodbury Public Safety Department hopes the incentive will remind kids to wear their helmets each time they ride.

“Dairy Queen is a strong corporate partner for this campaign and we appreciate their support,” Vague said.

From the release:

According to the Minnesota Safety Council, children ages 5 to 15 experience the largest percentage of bicycle deaths and injuries. The Minnesota Safety Council also says bicycle-related head injuries result in two-thirds of the bicycle-related deaths each year and more than 600,000 emergency room visits. Furthermore, universal helmet use could save one life each day and prevent one head injury every four minutes.
