‘MacGyver’ Bombs Set Off at Two Woodbury Homes

Police say it's likely juveniles playing pranks and the bombs aren't "too explosive."

Woodbury police responded to two calls about “MacGyver” bombs set off at separate homes the night of April 1.

The incidents happened at the 7200 block of Newbury Court and the 1800 block of Lamplight Drive. In both situations residents called police the next day.

Cmdr. Jay Alberio said the Woodbury Police Department hears about a few similar incidents each summer, usually in fields or open spaces.

“Typically, it’s nothing too explosive,” he said.

The bombs set off in the April 1 incidents were similar—a plastic bottle containing a chemical and aluminum foil, according to police reports.

The Newbury court bomb exploded in the yard, and a resident there found debris the next day. The resident at Lamplight Drive told police three bombs exploded in his driveway, and he heard a loud report. He cleaned up the mess with a hose the next day but there was stain on his driveway, according to a police report.

Teenagers live at both homes, according to the police reports. Alberio said it’s likely juvenile perpetrators, but the department doesn’t view it as a major problem in the city.

“It’s not like it’s happening every weekend,” he said. “We don’t experience these a lot.”
