Man Charged with Using Stolen Credit Card in Oakdale, Woodbury

Michael Lyle Vincent Wilhelm is set to be sentenced on an earlier car-theft conviction on Jan. 30.

A Minneapolis man who was convicted earlier in November of felony car theft has been charged with using a stolen credit card at stores in Oakdale and Woodbury over the summer.

Michael Lyle Vincent Wilhelm, 29, is charged with aiding and abetting credit card fraud, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, Oakdale police were notified in early July that a woman’s wallet had been stolen, and her credit card used “multiple times” in Oakdale, Woodbury and Hudson, WI.

Officers discovered the stolen card had been used to make purchases at Mills Fleet Farm in Oakdale and Walmart in Woodbury. According to court documents, Wilhelm and a co-defendant tried to buy two Apple tablets and two watches valued at $753 at the Oakdale Target, but the transaction was declined; they also attempted to buy an inflatable boat and some rope at the Oakdale Fleet Farm, but that $187 transaction also was declined.

The two were successful in buying $33 worth of gasoline at the Oakdale Fleet Farm and $435 worth of items at the Woodbury Walmart, according to the complaint.

A Minnesota State Patrol officer stopped a car on an unrelated matter on July 7 and found several credit cards, including the one that had been reported stolen and used in Oakdale and Woodbury, along with the victim’s purse. The items were found beneath a passenger seat in which Wilhelm was sitting, according to the complaint.

Police viewed surveillance video from the Woodbury Walmart and determined that Wilhelm, wearing a red glove on his left hand, was involved in the transaction. Wilhelm was shown the video and admitted that he was the glove-wearing individual.

Wilhelm, who is scheduled to be sentenced on the earlier car-theft conviction on Jan. 30, will make an initial appearance on the credit-card fraud charge Dec. 12 in Washington County District Court.
