Updated: Woodbury Police Investigate Sexual Assault

A 33-year-old woman was out for a jog at about 5:30 a.m. at Markgrafs Lake Park on Saturday when the assault occurred.

Woodbury police today are following up on potential leads called in from residents about a sexual assault that occurred at a city park over the weekend.

The police department received a few phone calls after news broke that a 33-year-old woman was raped while jogging at at about 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, Cmdr. Jay Alberio said Monday morning. Authorities are now following up on those calls and continuing to canvass the neighborhood, he said.

Police have no further description of the subject, other than it was a man, Alberio said. The woman did not know the assailant, he said.

The attack occurred along a walking path on the northeast side of , which is in the northeast area of Woodbury. The woman was injured and evaluated at . The victim reported the rape, Sgt. Neil Bauer said on Saturday.

Bauer said the park is not known as a dangerous area, and police were having a difficult time finding a similar incident of an attack by a stranger reported in recent years.

Police have collected forensic evidence that will be sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for analysis, Alberio said. Police hope to get a DNA match, he said.

Understandably, residents in the area were "shocked" about the crime, Alberio said.

"This just doesn't happen in Woodbury," he said.
