Snapshot: Light Bulbs Stolen From Woodbury Homes

Police suspect juveniles are taking light bulbs from homes and breaking them because "the bulbs make a popping sound."

It’s not the biggest crime in the world, but in the words of one Woodbury resident, it is a bit odd.

In recent weeks outdoor light bulbs have been along Spinaker Drive in Woodbury, mostly around the 1600-1700 blocks.

Cathy Stevenson, out walking her dog in the neighborhood on Tuesday, told Patch that she has had light bulbs stolen twice—once during winter and again a few weeks ago. Her husband didn’t call police after the first incident, but did the second time it happened.

“They’re not taking all five, just the ones that aren’t near the windows,” she said.

Authorities don’t suspect the perpetrators are targeting specific homes, or in order to hide more serious criminal activity, Cmdr. Jay Alberio said.

“To me, it sounds like malicious mischief that kids are doing,” he said.

In a few instances, the light bulbs have been thrown on the ground in driveways, Alberio said. “Kids think it's cool. ... The bulbs make a popping sound.”

Around the holidays, police receive similar complaints about Christmas lights, he said.

Back on Spinaker Drive, Stevenson said she used to have fixtures that required a little work before a light bulb could be removed. The bulbs were taken from her home only after she and her husband made the switch to fixtures that gave easier access to the bulbs.

Stevenson said police told her it was likely youngsters out messing around.

On Tuesday, one neighbor said a fairly sizable tree was cut down by juveniles last year, and another said the mischief was surprising because a few police officers live in the area.

Stevenson said there isn’t a lot of crime in the neighborhood in general. As for the light bulbs: “It was very odd.”
