Suspected Bank Robber Expected to be Charged this Week

The man who caused authorities to shut down downtown Stillwater on Saturday morning will likely be charged with two felonies this week by the Washington County Attorney’s Office. 

David Michael Tyler, 64, of Cheboygan, Mich., was arrested Saturday morning after he allegedly attempted to rob US Bank and then made a bomb threat. Several downtown roads and businesses were closed because of the incident.

Tyler stayed at the Lowell Inn on Friday night, walked into US Bank at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday and handed a bank employee a note, Stillwater Police Chief John Gannaway said. Tyler allegedly left a black briefcase in the bank and fled on foot. 

Stillwater Police arrested Tyler within two blocks of the bank as he attempted to get into a vehicle in an alley west of Main Street and south of Commercial Street.

The St. Paul bomb squad removed a black briefcase from US Bank at about 2 p.m., and then searched the area of Tyler’s vehicle. 

Tyler, 64, of Cheboygan, Mich., is being held in the Washington County Jail pending charges of robbery and making terroristic threats

The investigation of the incident is ongoing by the Stillwater Police Department, the Washington County Sheriff’s office, and the FBI.
