Volunteer Emergency Response Team: Standing Behind Our Protectors

The Public Safety Department would like to add at least 100 additional responders.

Article by Vicki Strong

When disaster strikes, a city’s first responders are overwhelmed very quickly.

A trained, ready volunteer force can make a significant difference for a community in crisis. And that is where Woodbury Public Safety Volunteer Emergency Response Team (VERT) comes in.

More than 100 VERT members are trained and ready to lead others in sandbagging, missing persons searches, disaster cleanup, mass-casualty sheltering, evacuations, perimeter control and more. Volunteers are also invited to help with the annual Mass Casualty Incident training. The Public Safety Department would like to add at least 100 additional responders.

“When our professional resources are exhausted, VERT members become a critical piece of our response efforts,” said Mike Richardson, emergency services commander.  “VERT helps minimize disruption and loss to the community.”

VERT steering committee member Christina Gandhi encourages others to consider joining VERT.

“If you believe that the best communities are those whose residents watch out for each other, this is a way to make a meaningful difference. If you can walk door-to-door, check people into an emergency shelter, fill a sandbag, or pass out snacks to fellow volunteers, you have the skills needed.”

VERT members must be at least 18 years of age and pass a criminal background check. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in two classes per year, which are free to VERT members and include CPR, incident command preparedness, triage, and sheltering.  Equipment, including ID badges, helmets and vests, is also provided.

To sign up, visit the city’s website, where you can download an application and background check form.

Complete the forms, have them notarized and mail them to Public Safety, 2100 Radio Drive, 55125. You may also personally drop them at the Public Safety Building, where staff can notarize them at no charge.
