Woodbury Man Sentenced for Assaulting Ex-Wife

He used a plastic bag and mini bat to choke the woman, and told her to "just let go and die" twice during separate incidents in September 2012, according to the complaint.

A Woodbury man was recently sentenced after he beat up, choked and threatened to kill his ex-wife during separate September 2012 incidents.

Joe Louis Johnson, 29, was sentenced to 45 months in prison on an assault charge and 14 months in prison on a domestic assault conviction, both of which will run concurrent with time he is already serving.

On Sept. 23, 2012, Woodbury police were contacted on a report that a man had assaulted his ex-wife on Sept. 19 and Sept. 21 that year.

The woman had injuries on her face and neck and had severe swelling on one side of her face, along with a bruised left eye and blood around her pupil, according to the criminal complaint.

The woman reported that Johnson became angry about what she had been doing during the early morning hours of Sept. 19, and he laid on top of her and started choking her and told her she was going to die, “just let go and die,” the complaint says.

The woman told police he backhanded her repeatedly, also threatened to kill her using a hammer, and at one point she began to vomit blood.

A similar incident unfolded on Sept. 21, with Johnson using a miniature bat and a plastic trash bag to choke her, according to the complaint.

Johnson was arrested Sept. 25 and admitted to choking her with his hands and the mini bat.
