Woodbury Woman Dies After Car Goes Into Ice Near La Crosse, WI

Ellen Ahmann of Woodbury was a Winona State University student. Her car was pulled from the creek on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

A 21-year-old Woodbury resident died after her car broke through the ice on Swift Creek near La Crosse, WI.

Ellen Ahmann was a Winona State University student, according to KARE 11.

"La Crosse Municipal Transit Utility bus driver called police at 1:27 a.m. Wednesday when he noticed tire tracks in the snow leaving Jackson Street, heading over an embankment toward the water," according to KARE.

The La Crosse Dive Unit responded, but it was too late to save Ahmann in 34-degree water. Officials are not sure what time her car went into the creek.

Emergency personnel pulled her car from the creek at about 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1. An autopsy will be performed Friday, Jan. 3.
