Bielenberg Dome Deflation a Go; Contractors Selected

It will be the first time the dome will be deflated since it was constructed in 1995.

After two delays because of weather, Woodbury is ready to move ahead with the deflation of the Bielenberg Sports Center’s dome.

The public is invited to watch the dome deflate. The event is set for 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 22. Jason Egerstrom, Woodbury communications coordinator, confirmed Friday that the city intends to go ahead with the deflation.

It will be the first time the dome will be deflated since it was constructed in 1995. Snow this week caused the city to delay the event; the forecast for Monday does call for rain.

Woodbury is building a new field house to replace the aging bubble. The $21.8 million project also includes a new two-story lobby, outdoor pleasure rink and upgrades to the existing ice arenas.

Once complete, the facility will span 90,000 square feet.

Dave Black has been the ice arena and field house manager at the Bielenberg Sports Center for its entire existence.

Yet in an interview with Patch earlier this year, he wasn’t too sentimental about the prospect of the bubble’s demise.

“Overall, it’s more excitement than nostalgia,” Black said of the coming end for the dome. “The price is going to be worth the prize.”

Note: Due to road construction on Radio Drive, drivers must use the access from Bailey Road at Pioneer Drive. People should park in the east lot and look for the gathering near the mechanical equipment on the east side of the field house.
