In Woodbury, New Power for Public Safety

The shiny new Woodbury Public Safety building will soon get a little boost from sunshine.

A series of solar panels will are set to be installed on the roof of the garage at the Radio Drive facility.

The panels were delivered Wednesday, Oct. 24, and wiring and installation will happen in the coming days, said Bob Klatt, Woodbury’s Parks and Recreation director.

The series of 3-by-4-foot panels will form a “solar panel array,” Klatt said.

“It’ll save us money and it augments our electricity,” he said.

The project will cost about $290,000, though the city’s share will only be about $40,000 because of rebates from Xcel Energy and federal energy tax credits, Klatt said.

It is expected to save the city about $6,500 annually.

It is the first public building in Woodbury to have solar panels, Klatt said, though the public safety complex does use geothermal for healing and cooling, and the rebuilt Bielenberg Sports Center will have both.

The city tries to use green technology “when it makes sense for us to do it economically,” Klatt said.
