New Firing Range in the Offing for Woodbury Cops?

Woodbury and Cottage Grove want state help to build a new training facility for public-safety workers, according to media reports and the City of Woodbury.

Woodbury police would get their own place to practice shooting under a plan for a new public-safety training facility that Woodbury and Cottage Grove are preparing to pitch to Gov. Mark Dayton, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported

The cities are asking Gov. Mark Dayton to include the project in his proposed bonding bill. If the funds are approved by the Legislature, the project would be started in 2016 and completed in 2017. ...

But Woodbury city administrator Clint Gridley said details about the facility's size and uses may change. "These are rough, broad estimates to begin the process to make a submission to get into the governor's consideration," Gridley said.

That's a similar sentiment expressed by another Woodbury official in May, according to the Woodbury Bulletin:

Woodbury Public Safety Director Lee Vague said that while the proposal is just in its infancy, “we just want to be planful and look to the future.”

A new memo from Gridley outlines the scope of the project:

The public safety training facility would include, but not limited to, an indoor firearms range for police, a clean burn building for fire, and a simulation lab for EMS. The facility would also include areas of combined Public Safety use such as classrooms, driving simulators, and search and rescue to alleviate costly duplication of facilities.
