On Nov. 11, 1918, the armistice to end World War I was signed in a railroad car somewhere in the Forest of Compiegne, France. This became an annual observance in the United States, where it is called Veterans Day; in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand where it is called Armistice Day; and in Canada, where it is called Remembrance Day.
