Shut Down Woodbury’s Red Roof Inn? It’s Not That Simple

In the wake of the hostage standoff that left one man dead, residents have been asking for something to be done at the motel.

As news of the hostage standoff at the broke during the early-morning hours of Aug. 31, many in Woodbury had the same reaction.

Why doesn’t the city just shut it down?

The comments on Patch stories and elsewhere on the Internet relayed a common concern among residents over criminal activity at the motel, where last Friday one of the hostages was shot by police and a Stillwater man now stands accused of 27 felonies, including attempted murder and rape.

Some argued that repeated incidents at the Red Roof Inn seem to fall under the state’s public and private nuisance laws, while others said criminal activity would simply move elsewhere if the motel were shuttered.

Patch asked Woodbury officials what recourse the city has in dealing with the Red Roof Inn. In a statement, City Administrator Clint Gridley said the city “shares the community’s concerns about the level of criminal activity at the Red Roof Inn.”

“It is our intention to be in contact with the hotel management to seek to improve the situation,” he said.

However, the city’s authority in regulating businesses is limited in general, Gridley said.

“The comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance identify specific locations for various types of development (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial and retail),” he said. “The Red Roof Inn is located in the B-1 ‘Office Park’ zoning district and hotels are allowed in this district. It is a privately held business that has been operating in the city since 1981 and is a legal conforming use.”

Still, the city will continue to use the tools at its disposal—, code enforcement and community development—to “keep Woodbury a safe community to live, visit and do business,” Gridley said.

The motel is for sale, according to the website LoopNet.

The Red Roof Inn brings too much crime and drug activity into our city. Just shut it down!

The city's abilities might be somewhat limited but how about the county? That's where I'd pose the questions. Ask the County attorney about the public nuisance law and enforcement. Also, does anyone know if meth manufacturing has ever been found on this property? If the answer is Yes than I'd want to know what the county's dept of Public health is going to do about enforcing ordinances concerning properties where this has happened.

If the Red Roof Inn is truly for sale, this offers someone the opportunity run a successful business that would benefit the owner as well as the community. Dump a little money into it, clean it up, update it and increase rates. It will automatically be more appealing to a more desirable clientele.

Well if the Roof is for sale then we can get someone to buy it and get rid of the riff raff

as a reporter you may need to be a bit more impartial ... don't you think no facts should mean no talk!!

The management of the Red Roof Inn is the PROBLEM. Knowingly renting rooms to minors, allowing minors on the premises with alcohol, accepting cash for room rental , all of these facts can be attributed to POOR management.

A drive-by the place this morning following an appointment at Summit Orthopedic Brace, proved otherwise. People loitering about. children outside the motel waiting for school buses. People randomly sitting amongst shrubbery. I am not buying it. This place is bringing in seedy people!

Andrew, do you work at the Red Roof, or do you associate with anyone at the Red Roof that would be able to provide you with sensitive customer or employee information?
Kris Janisch September 06, 2012 at 05:02 PM
Betsy, is that the same at every Red Roof Inn? Or just the one in Woodbury? Is it policy or management?

@Mark Rahn It's You're, not your.

The Red Roof Inn has looked bad for years. The bar next to it is a low life place too. They both need so be gone.

I'm having a hard time believing that the management is in full legal compliance. I really do, just my opinion.
Betsy Golden September 07, 2012 at 02:30 AM
Kris, I can only attest that the above is true for the Woodbury Red Roof Inn. It is well known to minors that they can easily rent a room there for cash and drink and partake in other activities!!!
