Woodbury Approves Cabela’s Building Plan

Council members did express some concerns about traffic and screening from Radio Drive.

The Woodbury City Council approved Wednesday a series of measures that move forward Cabela’s plans to build a new store in town.

“We’re looking forward to Cabela’s, as are many other people,” said Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens.

The outdoor-goods retailer plans to build a new 100,000-square-foot store on a nearly 16-acre site at the southwest intersection of Radio Drive and Interstate 94.

The council discussion Wednesday primarily focused on traffic at the site, where there are also plans for three other retail buildings totaling 12,000-square-feet.

Upon hearing the Cabela’s announcement, Councilwoman Amy Scoggins said one of her first thoughts was: “I hope it’s not going to cause a lot of traffic issues.”

Councilman Paul Rebholz, recalling issues with the Woodbury Drive project this year, said he had concerns about Hudson Road, as the street goes from two lanes to four to the west.

Eric Searles, senior planner for Woodbury, said a traffic study suggested several mitigation alternatives, including additional turn lanes, special parking for RVs or vehicles with trailers, additional signage and modifying the stoplight at Radio Drive and Hudson Road, which will serve as the primary entry point.

Rebholz also asked about landscaping to screen outdoor display areas at Cabela’s, saying the area serves as the “gateway to the community.”

“Other than that, we’re thrilled to have Cabela’s come to the community,” he said.

Construction is expected to begin this summer.
