Woodbury Awards $16.8 Million in Contracts for Bielenberg Expansion

Work on razing the dome and lobby is set to begin April 8.

With demolition at the Bielenberg Sports Center to begin in early April, the Woodbury City Council on Wednesday approved millions in contracts for the expansion project.

Woodbury is planning to build a new permanent field house to replace the aging dome, along with a new two-story lobby linking the new structure and existing ice arenas, and an outdoor pleasure rink. The estimated cost is $21.8 million.

The total estimate for the 24 “work scopes” was $18.2 million, but the bids came in at $17.9 million, Parks and Recreation Director Bob Klatt told the council.

There were four bids the council declined to approve Wednesday—metal panels, joint sealants, flooring and gym equipment. Those projects will be further evaluated as the work moves along. (The four contracts being held pending further review for the base and alternate bids total $1,161,829.)

The total amount of the bids awarded Wednesday was just under $16.8 million.

“All in all, we’re in very good shape,” Klatt said.

The remaining costs fall under several categories, Klatt said Monday, including $150,000 for solar panels, $500,000 for a possible water feature and associated work, $2.34 million for non-construction costs (consultants, architects and furnishings for the facility), and $507,000 for contingencies.

The only item the council discussed in any detail Wednesday was for Mondo Turf, which will be installed rather than the more commonly known FieldTurf. Klatt said the products are very similar.

“Same type of turf, different manufacturer,” he said.

Regarding the dome, which was built in 1995, Klatt said the city is planning “some sort of dome-deflation event.”

The , will be the last major event at the Bielenberg Sports Center before demolition work begins April 8.
