Woodbury Council Examines ‘Strategic Initiatives’

The city will continue to focus on the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion and further the implementation of its comprehensive plan.

The Woodbury City Council last week discussed a few options for matters it plans focus on over the next two years, settling on the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion and the city's comprehensive plan.

During the workshop meeting Wednesday, the council examined six firm options—with the door open to others at the members’ discretion—and also took a look back at the progress of the previous strategic initiatives: the 2030 Comprehensive Plan’s implementation and a performance-measurement program for city departments.

The expansion of and replacing the field house has been on the council’s radar for some time. Council members decided to roll the Phase II development into the continuation of the comp plan work.

City officials discussed the possibility of an ad hock bicycle task force, but seemed to think that not many people in Woodbury bike to work and many of the issues with bicyclists occur on county roads, over which the city has less control.

Street construction was another possible strategic initiative that drew some discussion, though the council decided to address it year by year along with the budget.

Speeding

The council discussed installing temporary “speed tables” as part of its efforts to curb speeding in some Woodbury neighborhoods, specifically along Woodcrest Drive.

Questions for the council were determining the criteria by which a neighborhood would have a speed table installed, how the city would determine its effectiveness and whether the speed table should be permanent.

Council members discussed other ideas to reduce speeding in certain areas, but decided to move the discussion to a future workshop meeting.

This Week’s Meeting

On Wednesday, the council is expected to discuss plans for the at East Ridge High School and a wine and beer license for the on Eagle Creek Lane.
