Woodbury Demographics, Bielenberg Restaurant: Council Preview

The city has become more diverse over the past decade. The council will also likely approve the lease agreement for a new restaurant that is part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project.

Woodbury from 1990 to 2010 became more diverse, with the percentage of white people in the city dropping from 95 percent to 81 percent.

That’s one example of a demographics presentation that will come before the Woodbury City Council at its Wednesday, Aug. 7, meeting.

“While it is commonly understood that Woodbury has seen tremendous population growth in the past three decades, not all of the city’s stakeholders may realize that this growth has been accompanied by a tremendous shift in demographics and cultural heritage,” reads a summary on the council agenda. “From our northwestern European agricultural roots of the late 19th century, Woodbury has grown to a dynamic and diverse community hosting some 65,000 residents.”

The demographics information was well received when it was presented at this year’s Citizens’ Academy, a program of the Woodbury Community Foundation, staff has told Patch.

The restaurant is slated for the second floor of the new lobby, which will link the new field house with the existing ice arenas. Gartner Restaurant Holdings will also run a first-floor concession area and plans to provide food cart service to surrounding fields.

Work is underway on the $21.8 million BSC expansion project; the opening is slated for the spring of 2014.

The lease will vary depending on whether a liquor license is granted for the restaurant. With a liquor license, the city will receive 12 percent of gross sales up to $1 million, and 10 percent for sales beyond that figure. Without a liquor license, rent will be 10 percent of all gross sales.

The council is expected to take up the liquor license discussion next March.

Plans for the site call for a new multi-purpose field house, outdoor pleasure rink, playground for kids of all abilities, improvements to the existing ice arenas and splash pad.

Meeting

The city is also expected to receive an award from the Minnesota GreenStep program.

The council meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 7, at City Hall.
