Woodbury Resident on Red Roof Inn: ‘Clean it Up or Close it Down’

Melanie Snyder, who started an online petition about the motel, spoke during Wednesday night's Woodbury City Council meeting.

Melanie Snyder, who has led an online petition regarding criminal activity at the Red Roof Inn, spoke during Wednesday night’s Woodbury City Council meeting.

As of last night, 336 people had signed it, she told reporters outside the council chambers.

Despite the city’s efforts to work with motel management, she said the initiatives seem to be geared toward appeasing residents’ concerns.

“I think there still needs to be some changes made,” Snyder said.

The motel has come under fire since the Aug. 31 hostage standoff that left one man dead after being shot by police. The suspect in the case has been charged with dozens of felonies, including attempted murder and rape.

Snyder said her petition to “shut down” the Red Roof Inn was meant as an attention grabber, and would rather see efforts made to curb criminal activity there.

“I'd hate to see a profitable business in Woodbury close,” she said.

Snyder said she has spoken to Public Safety Chief Lee Vague, who was “wonderful,” and the conversation went well.

Still, Snyder said she spends time in that neighborhood and wants to see something concrete done at the motel.

“It’s just a safety issue,” she said.

After Wednesday’s meeting Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens said the meetings with Red Roof Inn management have been productive and it’s good to have a dialogue in the community.
