Liberty and Justice for All

Celebrating the world's riddance of evil isn't about hate; it's about closure and perseverance as Americans.

Another historical marker on the books as Americans react to the death of Osama bin Laden.  But is it the man that is loathed so much that we celebrate his passing? Or is it what he stood for?

As the Washington Post’s Petula Dvorak scolds public celebration, I can’t help but think she is losing the message altogether.

May 1, 2011, inevitably brought all the memories and heartache of Sept. 11th back into our minds. So many people, not just Americans, lost their lives that day, and continue to lose their lives to terrorist acts. How can we as a human race not have feelings about that? How can we feel so much loss and so much pain, and then be expected to be nonchalant about the eradication of one of the most evil beings in modern day history?

Death to bin Laden isn’t just the death of a man; it is death to a leader of evil. It is the beginning of healing for those that lost loved ones to his hand, and the hands of his minions.  It is also the beginning of hope restored, that people, so evil in thought and deed will not go unpunished.

For centuries, America has been on a battle ground of sorts, with goals of protecting freedom and liberty. And as we do every Fourth of July, we celebrate our freedom and we celebrate America.

May 1, we found our freedom-hating “bully” if you will, and we stood up to him. As one nation under God, we set him to sea in a burial that honored life, regardless of how it was lived. We again celebrate our freedom, and America, and we make no apologies; especially to Ms. Dvorak.
