Crosswinds Students Left in Limbo as Legislature Adjourns

Crosswinds East Metro Arts & Science School is likely to sit empty next school year because members of the state legislature refused to pass a bill to grant specific authority to the East Metro Integration District.

Students at Woodbury's Crosswinds East Metro Arts & Science School and Maplewood's Harambee Elementary Community Cultures and Environmental Science School were left hanging when the Minnesota State Legislature ended its session on May 20 without resolving issues for the two schools, according to a Pioneer Press article.

Both schools are likely to sit empty next year because the East Metro Integration District (EMID) wasn't granted "the authority to transfer two programs they operate under the mission of diversifying urban and suburban schools," according to the article.

The outcome left already frustrated families in tears as the session ended Monday, Isaacson said. Students and parents lobbied hard throughout the legislative session to save the schools.

"This is a terrible civics lesson for the kids," said Bill Droessler, a parent with two sons in EMID schools who awaited a decision Monday at the Capitol.
