Having a Field Day in Woodbury

Fifth-grade students from five elementary schools in Woodbury came together Friday to compete in track and field events at Woodbury High School.

About 600 fifth-grade students from five elementary schools in Woodbury competed during Friday’s daylong Field Day event.

With Woodbury High School track athletes offering tips and advice, the young students competed in a wide range of events, from the high jump and various sprints to distance runs and shot put.

“They’re pretty busy,” said Phil McDermott, a physical education teacher at .

Physical education teachers at the elementary schools hold their track sections in conjunction with the annual end-of-year event, McDermott said, and there are north and south events for District 833.

About 100 parent volunteers helped coordinate the days events and time the students.

“We couldn’t do it without them,” McDermott said.

While it’s meant as a fun event, he said ribbons are handed out to the top five performers in each event.

“It’s a lot of fun,” McDermott said. “And every year there are surprises.”
