Fundraising with Free Throws in Woodbury

Members of the Woodbury High School staff and Woodbury Public Safety Department are taking it to the rim for the WHS choir.

"Nothing but net" for 10 new choir robes.

That's the goal of a fundraising basketball game taking place in the WHS gym on Wednesday, Feb. 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Members of the WHS staff—including choir director Daryl Timmer—are challenging members of the Woodbury Public Safety Department—including towering Woodbury Police Chief Lee Vague—in the paint. And the match-up looks to be a good one.

"We've convinced the police chief to be part of the team because his daughter is a student at Woodbury High School this year," said Bill Mason, an officer with the and the school resource officer at WHS. "He's taller than most centers, so he should do well."

According to Timmer, the fundraiser—now in its third year—is sponsored by the WHS Choir Boosters and typically draws a good crowd.

"Last year, we raised money for marching band uniforms," he said. "With the addition of ninth-graders to our choir program, we need to purchase robes that are a little shorter, at a  cost of $180 each."

In addition to the game, there will be door prizes and a silent auction, the spirit squad and the choir will perform, and concessions will be available. The cost of admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students with an ID, and $1 for children.

"It's a really light-hearted, fun kind of activity," said Timmer, adding that  teachers from every department in the school participate.

Mason said there are a dozen Public Safety Department members—police officers and firefighters—scheduled to play in the game, with the exception of one.

"I'm going to be the third string benchwarmer," he said with a laugh.
