Royal Open Golf Tourney To Benefit Woodbury Football Program

The event, set for Aug. 4, has a host of new features this year.

As a new coach takes over the reigns of the football team, there are also plenty of changes lined up for the sixth annual Royal Open.

The event, set for Aug. 4 at , will feature a dunk tank, a Bob Hope-style “mini-roast” of seniors, freshmen car wash and other attractions, in addition to golf tournament staples like a raffle, silent auction and on-course competition, said Kim Benjamin, tournament co-chair with Jody Lowe.

The tournament is meant to kick off the new football season under and raise $12,000 to $15,000 for the Woodbury program.

“I think that’s going to be doable,” Benjamin said, adding that much of the money will go toward new concussion-resistant helmets for players.

Organizers are hoping for 100 golfers for the event; already 80 are signed up for dinner after.

, a couple of his assistants and senior players will be in the dunk tank, Vikings cheerleaders will be on hand and sports tickets and memorabilia and behind-the-scenes passes to four Royals football games are part of the raffle and silent auction offerings. The Woodbury High School band is also set to perform.

Still, the idea behind the event is to get the community fired up for Woodbury football.

“We want to make Royal Stadium the place to be on Friday nights,” Benjamin said.

Hill has been a welcome addition to the team.

“He’s really brought a whole new attitude,” Benjamin said.

Car Wash

The car wash will be held in conjunction with the Royal Open—it will run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday Aug. 4, in the Prestwick parking lot.
