School Board Set to Choose New Member

A special meeting is planned for Friday, Jan. 4.

The District 833 School Board on Friday will likely choose a new member to replace departing Chair Leslee Boyd, who is moving out of state.

The board previously winnowed the list of candidates for the position from 14 to five, and interviews will be held during a special meeting set for 5:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the District Service Center, 7362 East Point Douglas Road S., in Cottage Grove.

The meeting is open to the public but will not be video recorded.

The five candidates are:

  • Rick Goecke of Cottage Grove
  • Jonathan Hunt of Woodbury
  • Kathleen McElwee-Stevens of Newport
  • Daryl Parks of Woodbury
  • William Thurmes of Cottage Grove

On Friday, there will be a board discussion until 6:15 p.m., followed by the interviews until 8:45 p.m., with a debriefing and possible vote to follow.

The appointed person’s term will expire at the end of the day on Nov. 5, 2013 (Election Day).

Question for candidates: "The last school board election had incumbent school board members running on a platform of 'Everything is great. Re-elect me to continue this good leadership!' Then the ball dropped and a very good superintendent was let go. This was an apparent hidden agenda of the incumbents who were re-elected. What are the key issues that you bring to the table as a school board candidate? Are there any hidden agendas that you will be bringing to the table? What evidence would you give that would indicate that you would have a higher degree of integrity than these previous candidates?"

I've about given up on the school board and the U.S. Congress; it's all political razz-ma-tazz. I agree with the above question for candidates; I too felt that the present board had a hidden agenda when they were elected. A perfectly good superintendent was let go and there has been no accountability by the rest of the school board.

It will be interesting to see who they choose, and how the next election shakes out.
