School District Begins Work on New Five-Year Strategic Plan

Officials are soliciting the public's input for "Pathway to Excellence."

South Washington County Schools officials are working toward a new five-year plan that will map out the district’s priorities and outline areas in which schools are succeeding and others where they need to improve.

District 833 is asking for public feedback on “Pathway to Excellence.” The document will supplant the previous strategic plan, which was the first in the district’s history.

Opportunities for public input begin Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Park High School, with following sessions on Feb. 22 at and March 1 at . The sessions all run from 6:30-8 p.m.

Residents should know that the plan does not include everything the district will do over the next five years, said Barb Brown, District 833 director of communications, otherwise the document would be massive. “We’d have novels,” she said.

The school board does an annual review of the plan, Brown said, and members often refer to the document when making decisions. The public took notice as well, often referencing the plan during discussions about expanding the district’s Spanish immersion program, she said.

People don’t have to RSVP for the public meetings, but should if they plan to participate in focus groups that will be held in conjunction with the events. Call 651-458-6306 to register.

Meanwhile, the district is also recruiting residents for two groups that will be more involved in the process of creating Pathway to Excellence over the next several months. One is a Strategic Planning Team, which will be followed by Action Planning Team. (Click on the links to apply for each.)

The school board will likely approve the plan on June 16, Brown said.
