Alex Poor, 7, won a WCCO contest and got to check out batting practice on the field, get autographs from Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau, and score some sunflower seeds and bubblegum from Twins players, “which he thought was pretty cool,” said his mother, Missy Poor.
“To see it through a 7-year-old’s eyes is priceless. … This is his dream,” Missy said.
She signed up for the WCCO-TV contest in May and heard last week that Alex would be one of the station's “Batting Practice Buddies” for Tuesday night’s game. The family got four tickets for the game at Target Field, but it was Alex’s time on the field, meeting his "baseball heroes," that he will never forget, his mother said.
“It was a very, very cool experience,” Missy said.
Going into second grade at Liberty Ridge Elementary in Woodbury, Alex is a “huge” baseball fan, she said.
“That’s the only thing he wants to play,” Missy said.
Being a Batting Practice Buddy, Alex got a little airtime with WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer, who also lives in Woodbury. Alex was a bit nervous about going on television, but overall he had a blast, Missy said.
Alex has his autographed baseball on his bedside table.
“It was just a great experience,” Missy said. “He’ll remember it.”
