Football Friday: SPA/MPA at New Life Academy

Both teams put up good yardage numbers on offense in their openers, but not enough points to get wins.

(0-1, 0-0 Tri-Metro East) almost ; SPA/MPA (0-1, 0-0 Tri-Metro West) lost 36-21 to St. Agnes.

Max Matilla (New Life Academy, fullback/linebacker)

Matilla rushed 18 times for 125 yards and also ran back an interception for a touchdown against Breck.

Jordan Nieuwsma (New Life Academy, running back)

Nieuwsma carried 14 times for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Karl Hommeyer (SPA/MPA, wide receiver)

Hommeyer had 128 yards and a score on just three catches a week ago.

They can find a way to convert PATs. They matched Breck touchdown for touchdown last week, but were 0-for-3 on conversions in their one-point loss. They will also need to continue their success running the football.

They can shore up their red zone defense. Four of St. Agnes's five touchdown runs came from inside the 5 yard line, which means SPA/MPA's defense was spending way too much time backed up against its own goal line and also that the Spartans were not able to come stop the Aggies' rushing attack.
