Going Up: Woodbury's Bielenberg Sports Center Expansion

The Bielenberg Sports Center expansion is one of the state's largest steel projects this year.

Steel beams that will provide the backbone of the new Bielenberg Sports Center field house are going up.

Crews were busy Wednesday morning at the site, where a $21.8 million expansion of the facility is underway.

David Black, ice arena and field house manager at the Bielenberg Sports Center, said it’s nice to see something tangible happening with the project, “rather than dirt being moved around.”

“It’s kind of like the project has come out of the ground all of a sudden,” Black said.

It should take about four weeks to get the girders up and the building framed, he said. Between now and Labor Day, people will be able to see the most visible parts of the project happening, Black said.

“It’s a very fun time for us out here,” he said.

The Project

Plans call for a new field house, outdoor rink, two-story lobby, splash pad, restaurant and other improvements.

A playground for children of all abilities, Madison’s Place, is also slated adjacent to the field house. The existing ice arenas will remain but receive $500,000 in upgrades.

The Bielenberg Sports Center expansion is one of the state’s largest steel projects this year, according to Jason Egerstrom, communications coordinator.

The facility is expected to open in the spring of 2014.
