Sports Roundup: Local Soccer Teams Turn Toward Postseason

With 10th Suburban East Conference title already in hand, Woodbury girls soccer took a victory lap on Thursday in shutout of Mounds View.

As the leaves turn and begin to fall, more and more local athletes are finding their sights turning towards the post-season, with soccer teams from , and preparing for their respective sectional tournaments.

Woodbury Girls Soccer

With its 10th Suburban East Conference title already in hand, the Woodbury girls soccer took a victory lap on Thursday in a 3-0 shutout of Mounds View.

The victory concluded a perfect 9-0 conference slate for the Royals, who have claimed at least a share of every SEC title since the inception of the conference in 2002.

Individual results from the game were not available. Maddie Nelson held the team's scoring lead heading into the contest with 10 goals. 

The 13-3 Royals, ranked fifth in Class AA, are a virtual lock for the top seed in the forthcoming Section 4AA Tournament, slated to begin on Oct. 11.

As a top seed, Woodbury would receive a first-round bye and play its initial playoff game at home on Oct. 13.

Woodbury Boys Soccer

The Woodbury boys soccer team missed out on concluding the regular season with a .500 record as the Royals fell to 7-8 overall and 6-3 in the Suburban East with a 2-1 loss at Mounds View on Thursday.

Lucas Hauswirth led Woodbury with eight goals in the regular season, followed by Bobby Kostadinov with six goals heading into the playoffs.

The Royals now await their seeding and first-round matchup for the Section 4AA Tournament, slated to run in four rounds from Oct. 11-18.

East Ridge Girls Soccer

The eighth-ranked East Ridge girls soccer team lost for the first time in eight games on Thursday as the Raptors dropped a 1-0 contest to visiting intra-district rival Park in the Suburban East finale.

Individual statistics were not made available. Park's victory vaulted the Wolfpack past the Raptors for the runner-up slot in the Suburban East, with their 6-2-1 conference mark one-half game better than East Ridge's 6-3 SEC tally.

With one game left to tune up for the playoffs, the Raptors head to Hill-Murray on Saturday with an overall record of 12-3-0.

East Ridge now awaits its seeding and first-round matchup for the Section 4AA Tournament, with a top-four seed and a home game on Oct. 13 likely.

New Life Girls Soccer

The third-seeded New Life girls soccer team lost 3-1 to No. 2 seed Southwest Christian on Thursday in the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association Tournament semifinals to fall to 9-4-1 on the season.

In its final pre-sectional game, the Eagles take on West Lutheran in the tourney's third-place matchup at Rich Valley Field in Inver Grove Heights at 10 a.m. Saturday.

East Ridge Boys Soccer

A 3-0 loss to visiting Park in the Suburban East finale on Thursday was the Raptors' first defeat since Sept. 15 and it left the Raptors with an 8-7-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 final conference mark.

Won Suk Chung led East Ridge with 19 goals during the regular season, with Luke Featherstone scoring seven times thus far.

The Raptors now await their seeding and first-round matchup for the Section 4AA Tournament, slated to run in four rounds from Oct. 11-18.

New Life Boys Soccer

The New Life Academy boys soccer team, seeded fourth in the MCAA Tournament, topped No. 1 seed Southwest Christian, 2-1, on Thursday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The 6-7-2 Eagles now advance to the title game against second-seeded Heritage Christian at Rich Valley Field in Inver Grove Heights at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Woodbury Cross-Country

The Woodbury boys and girls cross-country teams finished fourth and 12th, respectively, in the Blaine Invitational on Thursday.

Taylor Voit led the boys with a 15th-place individual finish in 17 minutes, 11.1 seconds over the 5,000-meter course, while Darby Baranick's time of 15:52.2 over 4,000-meter course placed her 25th individually to lead the girls.

East Ridge Cross-Country

With three top-10 individual finishes, the East Ridge girls cross-country team won the Blaine Invitational as the Raptors boys took ninth.

Bailey Ness placed third with a 15:11.8 over 4,000 meters, followed by Brenley Goertzen in eighth with a 15:17.9 and Emily Betz in ninth with a 15:18.4. Also contributing to the girls placement were Liz Maata (15:51.2) in 24th and Taylor Jackson (15:55.0) in 27th.

Nate Roese led the boys with a seventh-place individual time of 16:48.1.

Woodbury Girls Tennis

The ninth-seeded Woodbury girls tennis team was eliminated from the Section 4AA Tournament with a 6-1 loss at top-seeded Stillwater on Wednesday. Individual statistics were not made available. 

Selected members of the team will compete in the individual sectional tournament, scheduled to begin on Oct. 13.

East Ridge Girls Tennis

Sixth-seeded East Ridge was eliminated by No. 3 Cretin-Derham Hall in the quarterfinals of the Section 4AA girls tennis tournament on Wednesday. Individual statistics were not made available. 

Selected members of the team will compete in the individual sectional tournament, scheduled to begin on Oct. 13.

Woodbury Volleyball

Back-to-back 3-0 Suburban East losses, to Mounds View on Tuesday and Cretin-Derham Hall on Thursday, have dropped the Woodbury volleyball team to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference. Individual statistics from the matches were not made available.

East Ridge Volleyball

A 3-2 loss to visiting Roseville dropped the East Ridge volleyball team to 11-11 overall and 4-3 in the SEC. Individual statistics from the match were not made available.

New Life Volleyball

The New Life volleyball team fell 3-1 to visiting Heritage Christian on Thursday to fall to 14-8-1 overall and 4-1 in the MCAA.

Kara Stenerson and Lauren Ruhr led the Eagles with 16 and 15 assists, respectively, with Ally Lamb and Abby Thor tying for tops on the team with eight kills apiece.

Girls Soccer

Woodbury claimed the No. 2 seed for the Section 4AA Tournament and will host No. 7 Cretin-Derham Hall on Thursday at 7 p.m.

East Ridge earned the No. 3 seed for the Section 4AA Tournament and will host No. 6 Hill-Murray on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Boys Soccer

East Ridge was handed the No. 4 seed in the Section 4AA Tournament and will host neighboring Woodbury at 7 p.m. Thursday night. The Raptors have never defeated the Royals.

Woodbury took the No. 5 seed in the Section 4AA Tournament and travels across town to play at No. 4 East Ridge at 7 p.m. Thursday night.

New Life

The New Life girls took a No. 3 seed in the Section 4A Tournament and was given a first-round bye.

The Eagles will play either No. 6 St. Agnes or No. 11 St. Paul Humboldt on Saturday at 11 a.m. New Life closed out the MCAA Tournament with a 1-0 defeat of West Lutheran in the third-place game.

The New Life boys lost 2-0 to Heritage Christian in the MCAA Tournament title game and were given a No. 9 seed for the Section 4A Tournament. The Eagles play at No.8 St. Paul Harding on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Scores and statistics were not made available for East Ridge and Woodbury girls swim/dive meets on Thursday.
