Sports Roundup: Woodbury Girls Cagers Take Two Wins

Royals highlight weekend home victories versus Stillwater, Mondovi, Wis.; East Ridge boys hockey claims non-conference triumph.

Back-to-back victories for the Woodbury girls basketball team headlined a weekend that also saw the East Ridge boys hockey squad claim a convincing non-conference home victory.

Woodbury Girls Basketball: Royals Top Stillwater, Mondovi At Home

The girls basketball team followed a 49-42 Suburban East Conference victory against Stillwater with a 66-45 defeat of cross-border rival Mondovi, Wis., to improve to 16-5 overall and 12-2 in the SEC.

Michelle Young scored a game-high 26 points as the Royals rallied from a 20-13 halftime deficit against the Ponies on Friday. Kristina White chipped in 18 points to keep Woodbury within one game of conference front-runner White Bear Lake.

Young took top scoring honors again on Saturday with 23 points in the 21-point win against Mondovi; White logged 13 points in the contest.

Woodbury returns to Suburban East play with a home game against Cretin-Derham Hall at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

East Ridge Boys Hockey: Raptors 5, Shakopee 1

A 5-1 defeat of visiting Shakopee in a non-conference matchup improved the boys hockey team's record to 10-14 on the season.

Michael Mader and Kelvin Walz each scored twice, with Jack Greeley adding a score as Spencer Donnelly made 13 saves for the victory.

East Ridge "hosts" Suburban East rival Park at 7:30 Thursday night in the Cottage Grove Ice Arena; both the Raptors and Wolfpack play home games at the building on rinks just a few feet apart. The Raptors are 5-12 in the SEC, Park is 0-15-1.

Woodbury Boys Hockey: Hastings 8, Royals 3

The Woodbury boys hockey team dropped to 12-12 overall and 7-10 in the SEC with an 8-3 loss to Hastings at the on Saturday night.

The visiting Raiders scored all eight goals over the first two periods to make it 13 goals that the Royals had given up over a three-period span between Saturday's matchup and the final frame of Thursday's loss to East Ridge before Woodbury held Hastings scoreless in the concluding stanza.

Blake Kelley, Matt Pederson and Ryan Winter each scored one goal apiece for the Royals in the loss.

Woodbury travels to Mounds View for a 7:30 p.m. SEC game on Thursday night.

East Ridge Boys Basketball: Roseville 81, Raptors 50

The East Ridge boys basketball team was thumped, 81-50, at Suburban East leader Roseville on Friday to fall to 11-9 overall and 5-7 in the conference.

Justin Pahl scored 17 points to lead the Raptors, who next host Hastings on Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m.

Woodbury Boys Basketball: Stillwater 52, Royals 41

Playing their first game at Stillwater since upsetting the Ponies in the sectional playoffs last season, the Woodbury boys basketball team fell to their hosts, 52-41, on Friday night.

The Royals were led by Ryan Fritze's 10 points in the loss that dropped the squad to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in the SEC.

Woodbury travels to Cretin-Derham Hall for a 7:15 p.m. game on Tuesday night.

East Ridge Girls Basketball: Apple Valley 67, Raptors 53

After falling to Roseville on Friday, the East Ridge girls basketball team was handed another home defeat—this time against non-conference opponent Apple Valley—on Saturday afternoon.

Katie Hagberg led all scorers with 19 points while Raptors teammate Jamie Swanson claimed 11 points in the defeat.

East Ridge, 5-17 overall, travels to fellow conference cellar-dweller Hastings for a 7:15 p.m. showdown on Tuesday night; both teams ate 1-13 in SEC play.

New Life Boys Basketball: Trinity 55, Eagles 44

The New Life Academy boys basketball team lost, 55-44, to Trinity at home on Friday night to fall to 5-12 overall and 3-6 in the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association.

Alex Heiser was the lone Eagle to muster up double-digit scoring with 13 points, while Cam Duffy chipped in seven points in the loss.

New Life travels to St. Anthony for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
