Sports Roundup: Woodbury Teams Enter Heart Of Fall Season

Local squads all turn the calendar from August to September with a full slate of contests.

As August turned to September, local high school sports teams prepared to enter the heart of the autumn sports season this week.

East Ridge Cross-Country

Paced by fifth-place finisher Bailey Ness, the girls cross-country team finished second in the Rolf Mellby Invitational last Friday at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

Returning to the course she and her Raptors teammates ran in the state meet last November, Ness finished the 4-kilometer race in 15 minutes, 44 seconds; she was followed by teammates Brenley Goertzen (16:21.1) in 18th, Emily Betz (16:21.2) in 19th, Elizabeth Maatta (16:28) in 22nd and Abbey Beissler (16:35) in 28th.

The Raptor boys team took 18th, with Nate Roese (17:42) finishing in 23rd place.

Woodbury Cross-Country

The boys and girls cross-country running teams finished seventh and eighth, respectively at the Rolf Mellby Invitational last Friday.

Sam Evans led the Royals boys with a 33rd-place finish of 17:52, with Darby Baranick (15:55) and Lauren Smith (16:09) taking eighth and 14th for the Woodbury girls.

Math and Science Cross-Country

The cross-country running teams competed in the Irish Invitational in Rosemount last Friday, with the girls taking 12th and the boys 13th.

Two-time state Class A participant Jacob Siekmeier finished eighth overall in a time of 10:20.2 to lead the boys team, while the Dragons girls squad was paced by Greta Siekmeier in 31st with a 12:54.5.

Woodbury Girls Soccer

The Woodbury girls soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in shutout manner at third-ranked Eagan last Tuesday, but then bounced back for a 1-0 defeat of cross-town rival East Ridge to improve to 3-1 on the year. Complete individual statistics were not available.

East Ridge Girls Soccer

A 1-0 loss to Woodbury last Thursday was the first setback of the season for the 2-1 East Ridge girls soccer team. The Raptors host their first Suburban East Conference home game of the year at 7 p.m. Thursday against Forest Lake.

Woodbury Boys Soccer

The Woodbury boys soccer team improved to 2-1 on the year with a 3-1 defeat of neighboring East Ridge last Thursday. Individual statistics were not available.

East Ridge Boys Soccer

The East Ridge boys soccer team heads into this week with a 2-3 record after defeating St. Paul Harding (3-1) last Tuesday before losing to Woodbury (3-1) and Prior Lake (2-1) last Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Heading into the Woodbury game, Won Suk Chung was leading the Raptors with two goals and three assists through the team's first three matchups.

New Life Boys Soccer

The boys soccer team scored its first goal and earned its first point of the season in a 1-1 tie at St. Paul Humboldt last Tuesday, then went on to score two more in its initial win of 2011, 2-1, at PACT Charter last Thursday.

Daniel Otto scored the Eagles' goal on an assist from Daniel Sleper to help get New Life out of the loss column in the Humboldt tie. Kolin Kiekhofer and Dylan Larson netted the game-deciding goals against PACT.

After losing its first two games in 3-0 shutouts, New Life improved to 1-2-1 following the tie and victory heading into its Minnesota Christian Athletic Association campaign this week.

New Life Girls Soccer

The New Life Academy girls soccer team improved to 3-1-1 with a 3-1 win at St. Paul Johnson last Tuesday and a 3-0 defeat of Legacy Christian two days later. Individual statistics were not available.

Woodbury Volleyball

A second-straight three-game sweep (23-25, 18-25, 16-25) last Thursday opened the season with an 0-2 record. Individual statistics were not made available.

East Ridge Volleyball

A four-game loss to St. Michael-Albertville (25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 23-25) last Thursday dropped the East Ridge volleyball team to 1-2 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.

New Life Volleyball

The New Life Academy volleyball team earned its first win of the season in a three-game sweep at St. Paul Johnson (25-13, 25-15, 25-12) on Wednesday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Eagles had previously lost their first matches of the season against East Ridge and St. Croix Lutheran in three games.

New Life, now 1-2, hosts Randolph in its home opener at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.

Woodbury Girls Tennis

The Woodbury girls tennis team defeated North St. Paul, 5-2 last Tuesday before falling by a 6-1 score to Hastings last Thursday. Individual statistics were not made available.

New Life Girls Tennis

The New Life girls tennis team was felled, 7-0, by Hill-Murray last Thursday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Results for the East Ridge girls tennis, East Ridge girls swim/dive and Woodbury girls swim/dive teams were not made available.
