Weekend Sports Roundup: Royals Lose Out on Share of SEC Title

Woodbury girls basketball swept by White Bear Lake; local wrestlers wrap team season at sectionals.

The Woodbury girls basketball team lost out on a share of the Suburban East Conference title on Friday night to headline a hoop-heavy weekend that also saw the Royals and East Ridge wrestling squads compete in the Section 4AAA team tournament.

Woodbury Girls Basketball: White Bear Lake 52, Royals 41

A 52-41 loss at White Bear Lake on Friday means the girls basketball team will settle for no better than second place in the Suburban East after being swept this winter by the conference-leading Bears.

The Royals could not dig their way out of a 26-14 halftime deficit in losing by 11 points as guards Kristina White and Michelle Young paced the visitors with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Woodbury, now 17-6 overall and 13-3 in the SEC, hosts Forest Lake at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Woodbury Boys Basketball: Royals Fall To WBL, Top Hudson

The Woodbury boys basketball team fell two games below .500 in the Suburban East with a 63-55 home loss to White Bear Lake on Friday, but claimed a 65-52 win at Hudson, Wis. on Saturday to close out the weekend in winning form.

The Royals, 9-13 overall and 6-8 in the conference got a game-high 22 points from Michael Policano in its loss to White Bear Lake; individual statistics from the Hudson contest were not available.

Woodbury travels to Forest Lake for a 7:15 p.m. matchup on Tuesday.

East Ridge Boys Basketball: Cretin-Derham Hall 73, Raptors 59

A 73-59 loss to visiting Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday dropped the boys basketball team to 12-10 overall and 6-8 in the Suburban East.

Dayo Idowu led the Raptors with 15 points, with Justin Pahl and Adam Schwartz chipping in 14 and 12 points, respectively.

East Ridge travels to Stillwater for a 7:15 p.m. game on Tuesday night.

East Ridge Girls Basketball: Cretin-Derham Hall 61, Raptors 36

The East Ridge girls basketball team fell to 6-18 overall and 2-14 in conference play with a 61-36 loss at Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday.

Jamie Swanson and Katie Hagberg recorded 13 and 12 points, respectively, as the lone Raptors to record double-digit scoring.

East Ridge hosts Stillwater on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Woodbury/East Ridge Wrestling: Royals, Raptors Bow Out At Section 4AAA Tournament

The full-team season came to an end for both the Woodbury and East Ridge wrestling squads at the Section 4AAA Tournament on Saturday.

East Ridge bowed out in the opening "pigtail" round in a 41-30 loss to North St. Paul.

Woodbury won its first-round match 42-28 over Roseville, but lost by a 58-6 score to Stillwater in the semifinals.

Up next for grapplers from both teams is the 4AAA individual tournament, to be held Feb. 25-26 at both White Bear Lake and Stillwater high schools.

New Life Girls Basketball: Providence 54, Eagles 34

The girls basketball team lost 54-34 to Providence Academy in the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association Tournament title game to fall to 17-7 on the season.

The Eagles trailed 22-20 at halftime before Providence pulled away in the final 18 minutes for the victory despite a game-high 19 points from New Life's Rebekah Schmidt.

Next up for the Eagles is an annual matchup against Minnehaha Academy to close out the regular season on Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. on the Curt Wetsel Court.

New Life Boys Basketball: Heritage 61, Eagles 56

The New Life boys basketball team fell 61-56 to Heritage Academy, dropping the squad to 5-14 overall this season.

Alex Heiser led the Eagles with 13 points, with Cody Linton scoring 12 points.

New Life travels to Bethlehem Academy for a 7:30 p.m. game on Monday night.
