Woodbury Boys Lacrosse Retains 'Big Oak' Cup

Royals down East Ridge/Park in second-annual cross-town rivalry game on Wednesday.

Mid-week on the local sports scene was highlighted by the annual District 833 lacrosse rivalry games between the and East Ridge/Park boys teams and the Woodbury/East Ridge and Park girls squads.

Boys Lacrosse: Woodbury Holds Onto 'Big Oak' Cup

For the second-straight season, the Woodbury boys lacrosse team has carried off the "Big Oak" Cup as the victor of the intra-district showdown with East Ridge/Park, winning 13-6 at on Wednesday.

Ben Alberts led the Royals with five goals and two assists, with teammate Joey Lindberg scoring three times and Matt Wardell twice; Blake Bergherr, Thomas Gand and Jim Rudesill all scored once apiece, with Bergherr adding five assists. Goaltender Josh Erickson made 11 saves. 

Statistics for East Ridge/Park were not available.

The "Big Oak" Cup debuted last season as the "Limpert SoWashCo Cup," going to the winner of the matchup between the new south Washington County rivals. The Royals won that first meeting, 7-3, at Woodbury High School.

The win upped Woodbury's record to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in Suburban East Conference play.

East Ridge/Park rebounded from the loss to defeat Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes 6-3 on Thursday to close out the week at 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the conference. Through seven games, Jacob Matenaer leads the co-op squad with 14 points.

Girls Lacrosse: Park 14, Woodbury/East Ridge 7

The Woodbury/East Ridge co-op team remained winless in two tries against its southern rival from Park as the Griffins fell to the Wolfpack 14-7 at Woodbury High School.

Park put the game away by out-scoring its hosts 9-2 in the first half before the teams played out to a 5-5 draw after halftime.

The Wolfpack also won last year's game, 15-9, at Park High School.

Individual Griffins statistics were not available. Woodbury/East Ridge fell to 5-5 this spring with the defeat. 

East Ridge Softball: Raptors Roll White Bear Lake

A 10-1 win at White Bear Lake on Wednesday improved the East Ridge softball team to 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the Suburban East.

Sam Gregory led the Raptors offensively with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including a three-run home run with six runs batted in and three runs scored.

East Ridge Baseball: Raptors Fall One Game Off Conference Pace

The East Ridge baseball team fell to 11-5 overall and 9-5 in the Suburban East with a 3-1 loss to Cretin-Derham Hall on Thursday after defeating Mounds View 4-2 on Wednesday.

Raptors pitcher Mitch Luebbe earned the complete-game victory against the Mustangs, striking out seven batters and giving up five hits and two walks. John Hietpas logged three RBIs to lead the East Ridge offense.

Mark Landgrebe hurled the complete game against CDH, striking out six Raiders while allowing six hits and two earned runs. Hietpas tallied East Ridge's lone RBI.

Woodbury Softball: Royals Split Mid-Week Games

A 1-0 win versus Cretin-Derham Hall on Wednesday, followed by an 11-1 loss at Park on Thursday, kept the Woodbury softball team at .500 overall with an 8-8 record (5-8 in the Suburban East).

Emily Beedle drove home Chloe Richter with the winning run against the Raiders, with pitcher Abbie Morris earning the shutout with nine strikeouts and just three hits allowed in seven innings.

However, it was Woodbury netting only three hits—one each from Beedle, Josie Ryan and Alex Benedict—with Jamie Reetz scoring the Royals' lone tally in the six-inning loss in Cottage Grove.

Woodbury Baseball: Stillwater 7, Royals 3

The Woodbury baseball team lost 7-3 to visiting conference rival Stillwater on Wednesday to fall to 3-12 overall and 3-10 in the Suburban East.

Ryan Fritze, Mike Policano and Chris Hofacker all logged RBIs, with Jonny Castro, Austin Fleischhacker and Chris Hofacker accounting for one run scored each. Fritze pitched all seven innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Woodbury And East Ridge Girls Golf: Royals Fourth, Raptors Sixth At River Oaks

The Woodbury and East Ridge girls golf teams both competed in a Suburban East meet at River Oaks Golf Course on Thursday, with the Royals carding a 183 and the Raptors a 185. Individual statistics were not available.

Woodbury Boys Tennis: Royals 5, St. Thomas Academy 2

The Woodbury boys tennis team topped St. Thomas Academy 5-2 in a non-conference match on Thursday. Individual results were not available.

New Life Softball: Eagles 4, Rice Lake (Wis.) 3

A 4-3 win over Rice Lake (Wis.) on Thursday improved the softball team to 14-2 overall. Individual statistics were not available.

New Life Boys Tennis: Simley 6, Eagles 1

The New Life Academy boys tennis team lost 6-1 to Simley on Wednesday. Individual results were not available.
