Residents Frustrated With Cut-Through Traffic from Woodbury Drive Project

The Woodbury City Council discussed the concerns at Wednesday night's meeting.

Residents of Woodbury’s Eagle Valley and Wedgewood Shores neighborhoods have contacted council members about issues with cut-through traffic related to the Woodbury Drive project.

Councilwoman Amy Scoggins broached the topic during Wednesday night’s Woodbury City Council meeting.

While picking up a daughter’s friend near the project area recently, Scoggins said she could barely back out of the driveway.

“This could be really bad if people keep cutting through,” she said.

Woodbury Drive is closed from Park Crossing to south of Lake Road, the northern part of the project, which will be completed first. Plans call for the road to be expanded to four lanes from Park Crossing to a quarter mile south of Bailey Road.

Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephen said she, too, has fielded numerous calls from residents about traffic issues, and the Public Safety Department, which stepped up speeding enforcement before Woodbury Drive was closed, is also working on a solution.

“Certainly we have an obligation to provide safety on these roads,” Stephens said.

Despite the spate of calls and emails, Scoggins said most people are understanding about the problems.

“We know that there’s going to be some hassle,” she said.

Councilman Paul Rebholz, meanwhile, said people should imagine how they would feel if they lived in the neighborhoods surrounding the project. He also said drivers should remember the speed limit.

“Use the posted detours and not the shortest path of least resistance,” Rebholz said.

The Project

It will be done in phases, with the northern part of the project area closing first.

Phase I

April through July. Road construction on Woodbury Drive from just south of Park Crossing/Eagle Valley Drive through Lake Road. The intersection of Woodbury Drive and Lake Road will be closed to all traffic, and detours will be in effect.

Phase II

August through November. Road construction on Woodbury Drive just south of Lake Road through Bailey Road. The intersection of Woodbury Drive and Bailey Road will be closed to all traffic and detours will be in effect.

Phase III

October through January. Installation of water reuse systems that will capture and utilize storm water runoff for irrigation of the Eagle Valley and Prestwick golf courses.
