Filing Period for District 833 School Board Opens Tuesday

South Washington County Schools will hold an information session for candidates on Aug. 1. The district also plans to put three ballot initiatives to voters in 2013.

The filing period for the South Washington County School Board opens Tuesday, July 30, and runs through Aug. 13.

There are five seats up for election this fall.

Four members will be elected to four-year terms. Those seats are currently held by:

One member will be elected to fill a two-year term, following the resignation of a former board member. Kathleen McElwee-Stevens holds that seat now.

Affidavits of candidacy are available at the District Service Center, 7362 E. Point Douglas Road S., in Cottage Grove. Candidates can file 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The filing fee is $2.

Candidates must be eligible voters, 21 or older upon assuming office, have been a resident of the school district for 30 days before the general election, and must have no other affidavit on file for any other office at the same primary or general election. Candidates must also confirm that they have not been convicted of an offense for which registration is required under state law.

Info Session

The district has planned a candidate information session for 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, in the boardroom at the District Service Center.

The election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5

Ballot Questions

South Washington County Schools will place three questions on this year’s ballot.

The exact language has yet to be finalized, but the district has released the basics of the questions.

Question 1: Renewal of the district’s expiring referendum, which generates approximately $4.6 million annually for the general fund.

Question 2: Increases the operating referendum by $337 per pupil or a total of approximately $6.9 million for the general fund, beginning in 2014-15 annually for the next 10 years.

Question 3: Requests $8 million for the purchase and improvement of land to meet future building needs.
