Whine Away!

When the weather forecaster used the words "yucky" and "gross" in her forecast, it only increased my resolve to end the complaining once and for all.

While the Winter of 2013 drags on and my friends' Facebook posts have moved us to Narnia or the North Pole, I have remained the self-proclaimed chair of the Stop-Whining-Now Committee.

Here are my glass-half-full affirmations:

  • We have had two straight easy winters and we've gotten spoiled and soft.  This year is much closer to normal.
  • The snowfalls have been beautiful.
  • It takes less time to shovel than to mow the grass.

Here are today's facts:

  • We have had more snow this April than the last 10 Aprils put together.
  • As of today (with more snow in the forecast), this has been the 4th snowiest April on record in the Twin Cities.
  • We should be at 61 degrees for our daily highs. We're struggling to reach the mid-30s. And we have yet to see 60 degrees.
  • Some parts of Minnesota have not seen bare lawn since last November.  November! August, and the end of summer, is closer than last November.

Undaunted, I turned on the forecast for some good news. There are no 60 degree temps in the long-range forecast. They are even backing away from the 50s we were so hoping for.

But I needed evidence that we are not suffering as badly as we seem to think we are. So, I just downloaded my photos from one year ago today to remind everyone that spring in Minnesota really never starts until May...

What?! Crab blossoms? Lilacs? Baby geese? Green grass?

That's it!

I throw in the towel. I officially give up my chair. Anyone who wants to take it is welcome to it. The job is just too hard.

My friend Sonya says this weather is her fault. She dry cleaned their winter coats.  Nancy put on flip flops. Jake removed his snowtires. Mark took the gas out of his snowblower and brought out the lawnmower.

Whatever the reason, it's obvious we, especially me, have been just way too optimistic. Spring is nowhere near. My half-full glass is frozen.

To all my friends who have been whining, I now say go ahead, whine away. We deserve it. Time for a pity party.

I'll bring the whine. You bring the cheese.

And maybe our snow shovels, just in case.
