Woodbury Helps Fill a Need for Stillwater

Staff members from Globe University-Woodbury fill sandbags as Stillwater braces for flooding along the St. Croix River.

Staff members from Globe University’s Woodbury campus filled sandbags in downtown Stillwater on Friday as that city prepares for what is expected to be a difficult flood season.

The local group partnered with Community Thread to fill sandbags for three hours; the Woodbury university had a global citizenship class signed up to help fill sandbags, but there were too many volunteers and the students were not able to contribute.

A Stillwater staffer thanked for sending help as the city braces for rising waters on the St. Croix River.

“I was so happy with Globe University’s turnout,” Beth Wolf, secretary of Public Works and Parks for Stillwater, said in a release from Globe. “Today is the last day and we think we will be good with the amount of sandbags we produced. They projected we needed 140,000 sandbags according to what the National Weather Service announced. After today, we will have more than 50,000 and I believe we should be good.”

About 20 staff members from Globe University participated in the volunteer effort.

“I am so proud to be a part of the Globe University staff,” said Jessica Blaisdale, service-learning coordinator. “I have been working with the Community Thread for a long time and I knew that this would be a great opportunity to help out with a real potential problem happening right here in our community.”

The following Globe staff members participated: Evan Eittrem, Vanessa Tait (and husband), Jessica Blaisdell, Rachel Lykken, Ben Flikeid, Corey Carlson, Bonnie Riley, Beth Collis, Brent Meyer, Katie Langer (and husband), Colleen Paynter, Brad Christopherson, Eric Burke, Kyre Sheahan, Heather Wydeven, Carol Hoffman, Brittany Gouze (and husband), David Clark, Lora Conwell, and Nichole Mohlenhoff.

Wolf said in a single day volunteers can fill 12,000 sandbags with 150 volunteers.

“Every little bit counts,” she said.
