Olive Branch Oil and Spice Company Coming to Woodbury Lakes

Its White Bear Lake location offers more than 50 types of olive oil and vinegar.

A store specializing in olive oil and vinegar is coming to Woodbury Lakes. The Olive Branch Oil and Spice Company plans to open a new shop at Woodbury Lakes, behind American Eagle, according to Laurie Mordorski, marketing director for the shopping center. The goal is to open around July 1, said owner Bruce Bushey, who does competitive grilling and owns the store with his wife, a former home economics teacher. The Olive Branch has an existing location in White Bear Lake, and the Woodbury location will be basically the same, Bushey said. It offers more than 50 types of olive oil and vinegar, all bottled daily. The store also carries more than 130 herbs, spices, rubs and blends, according to its website. Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbecue experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.      1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead—say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbecue America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbecue grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” …

All Set: Woodbury Council Approves Volleyball Court for Cowboy Jack’s

Cowboy Jack’s opened earlier this month.

Despite some minor concerns about noise, the Woodbury City Council approved Wednesday a permit for Cowboy Jack’s to have a volleyball court just north of the new restaurant. Cowboy Jack’s also plans other games—like bag toss—outside, along with live music, likely a single guitar player, said Dwight Picha, community development director. Those using the 6,000-square-foot sand volleyball court will also have access to food and drink service. Regarding noise concerns, Picha said the city doesn’t expect any issues, as Cowboy Jack’s isn’t located in a residential area, volleyball would have to end by 11 p.m. and “you’re going to hear the freeway.” Work on the court is already underway, and people have been signing up for leagues. The measure …

Coffee on the Go: Woodbury OKs Starbucks Drive-Thru

The Woodbury Village Starbucks is planning a small addition with room for additional seating, as well.

Drive-thru coffee options in Woodbury will expand by one. But probably not until next year. The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday approved Starbucks’ plans to build a small addition to its Valley Creek Plaza coffee shop that will feature a new drive-thru and additional seating. The 600-square-foot addition will be built on the east side of the structure, which Starbucks shares with Potbelly Sandwich Works. An access road will go in behind the building. Rick Schroeder, vice president of construction at Robert Muir Company, said the work could potentially start this year, but it's looking more like the spring of 2014, with completion in August of that year. Councilman Paul Rebholz asked staff to ensure there won’t be issues with cars and …

Woodbury PD: Drivers Can be Cited for Not Following Posted Detour Signs

The city urges motorists to use detours during Woodbury Drive construction.

The idea isn't just to hand out a bunch of tickets. The goal is to keep neighborhoods safe. The city on Wednesday sent out a notice urging drivers to use detours during the Woodbury Drive construction project. There have been complaints from residents about traffic volumes and speeding along Eagle Valley Drive. When cars are stopped in the neighborhoods surrounding the project, drivers may be asked to state their business. And motorists can be cited for not following posted signage—including detours. “Broadly speaking, when there is a posted road closure or road closed to thru traffic and officers stop a vehicle, they may site a driver for not obeying posted signs per MN Statute 169.06,” according to a statement Woodbury Public Safety …

Power Out Briefly for Thousands Wednesday in Woodbury

The Xcel Energy map of outages showed more than 5,500 customers without power.

Did you lose power in Woodbury on Wednesday morning? An electrical failure at a substation caused the outage, which lasted about 10 minutes, said Xcel Energy spokesman Tom Hoen. The total number of customers who lost power was 5,750, Hoen said. The outage lasted from 11:35-11:44 a.m. One resident told Patch power was out at Target, along with stoplights in the area. There were no crashes reported during the outage, Woodbury Fire Cmdr. Woodbury DFLer Susan Kent Reflects on First Term as State Senator

The Minnesota Legislature wrapped up the 2013 session Monday at midnight.

There’s no grace period for new state senators. Whether it’s learning the mechanics of the legislative process and the issues themselves or gathering input from stakeholders and constituents, Sen. Susan Kent had to dive right in as a freshman lawmaker. Another thing she learned as the representative for Woodbury in the upper chamber: “No matter what I do, I get cranky emails.” The Minnesota Legislature wrapped up the 2013 session Monday at midnight. Kent (DFL-Woodbury) said she approached her public service with “reverence” and found her colleagues, many of whom were also first-term legislators, to be equally committed. “So impressed with the caliber of people,” she said. “They work hard. They care deeply. … These are smart, capable people…

Schools, roads, safety, schools, community all are expensive and we need funding for all of these things in order to maintain the quality of living we have in Woodbury. All of us have expenses in our own homes that constantly increase. The government is the same way. People need to stop being so cheap. Life costs money!   more ›
