True, however, as I have seen in our schools "diversity" and integration are two different…Read More things. MN, statewide, is struggling with "diversity" and achievement gaps, as communities grow and change. Integration at Crosswinds includes socioeconomic and special education integration, not just "race". Perpich, who is ready, able and willing to run this school has a 100% high school graduation rate, and a ready-made mechanism to serve the whole state through excellent teacher training. This is a way for all MN communities to benefit, from Warroad to Worthington, Duluth, Woodbury and Cottage Grove, not just the kids at Crosswinds. When the Orchestra at Crosswinds won a prestigious award, the children were asked how many took private lessons, one raised their hand. Meanwhile, they bring kids to grade level, when they show up behind, in basics, like reading, and are closing individual and under-performing groups achievement gaps.
Why did enrollment at Crosswinds decrease, making it appear to be a failing school? The school was failed, by inherent board conflicts of interest through its governance model, as well as, building/land and money grabs, by some. For example, some in the collaborative have no students at Crosswinds and get approx $800,000 for being part of this collaborative for the children in their district (only one example).
How did I hear about Crosswinds? Not from the schools, but from my son's therapist, who had never heard a bad thing about the "different learners" who found a home there, her clients, district kids. There is virtually no bullying and many children need a safe place to be able to learn. We've seen this time and time again, with all the tragic headlines of our children being tormented and lost due to bullying. Good models for integration should be replicated statewide and Perpich can help make that happen. 833 has shown ZERO interest in this...

So basically Crosswinds follows the model of shipping the poor kids to a wealthy suburb, call it…Read More "integration," and all of a sudden the poor kids magically become smarter then they were before. This method has been tried for decades and it doesn't work. As far as kids with special learning needs, there are plenty of charter schools set up for this. The state doesn't needs to continue paying for this boondoggle. How much has the state spent to educate these 200 kids? 800k oer schools district, approx 10 school districts in EMID.....and that's on on top of the per pupil state funding Crosswinds gets as well....ouch. No wonder why we "had" to raise taxes by 2 Billion.

School lunchroom: Latino kids at one table, white kids at one table, African American kids at one…Read More table, Asian kids at one table = "Diversity". Orchestra kids, Drama kids, sports kids, skateboard kids, robotics league kids, special needs kids, all of different races, backgrounds, abilities, interacting together at all tables = "Integration." At Crosswinds there is virtually no achievement gap by 10th grade. What they do at Crosswinds must be doing something valuable, so maybe we should allow it to be shared. Too bad the local districts never advertised the schools or looked at their successes and the EMID governance drove away half the families there by repeatedly attempting to close the schools (the reason for the decreasing enrollment). And 833 MAKES over $2M each year in integration funding by being part of EMID. The are not "losing" money because they don't serve the 38 students that choose to go there. Now that they have closed the EMID schools they can keep ALL the integration money. The Perpich proposal is revenue neutral, whether the kids go to their home districts or not.

Softball Varsity parent May 6, 2013 at 11:43 am
Lori, you are right about other coaches at the school, and how they should also be reprimanded, or…Read More even removed! The varsity softball coach is a great example, Bob Sampson. Just last Thursday (May 2) Bob Sampson showed his colors again by yelling at the top of his lungs, from third base at a player that took a third strike. Not a little bit of yelling, but a lot. Everyone in the whole stadium heard for over a minute on how bad that player was for thinking it was ball 4. Like I said this is not the first time for Sampson. He believes this is a way to motivate the players, with fear. This type of coaching is the old way. Doesn't help, is abusive toward the player, and players, and gives the wrong message that yelling is okay. We wouldn't except this in the work place, and we wouldn't let girlfriends or boyfriends yell at our kids, so way do we let the coaches do it? Woodbury High School AD, and officials should now turn the attention toward Bob Sampson. Remove him.

It's time for people to wake up to the fact that sometimes parent complaints are valid, are voiced…Read More to protect all students from harm and that there are just some people who should never coach young people. It's not an all or nothing situation - some coaches behave inappropriately and should be removed and some parents complain about things they shouldn't. Athletic Directors need to step up and supervise their coaches, have an ethical philosophy about the treatment of student athletes. Above all we need to put the interests of STUDENTS first. Students deserve coaches who are moral and treat players with respect. Kids should enjoy their high school athletic experiences and not be bullied or traumatized by bad coaches. It shouldn't matter who complains or raises the issue - what should matter is did the coach do something that deserves non-renewal.
BBparent May 6, 2013 at 05:56 pm
Dear Resident, And just how do you know what this coach does and says to his athletes? Are you in…Read More the locker room and dugout, do you attend practices, are you at games? I've heard way too many stories from people not in a position to judge what a coach is actually doing who come forward and say so-n-so is a great guy. Maybe he acts that way to you, but there are some screwed up coaches who hide their treatment of athletes and threaten their teams not to tell - basic bully behavior - what really happens. Bullies have favorites who stand up for them. Putting in a lot of effort does not make someone a good coach. Teaching the game, sportsmanship and being a role model for kids is the bar I think coaches should be judged against.

Watched it on ESPN!!!!! Cool doesn't even begin to describe it! To have our school described as…Read More "Another school that is always up there at the top," "East Ridge High School from Minnesota." Unreal!!! The team has only gone down three years and has already reached this level. Many teams go for years without making finals let alone being mentioned on T.V. This just go to show what hard work, dedication (by families, athletes and coaches) and school support can accomplish! Together we are so much stronger than alone - the definition of a team! WE ARE -- EAST RIDGE!!
