Woodbury Council Mulls Alcohol for Bielenberg Sports Center Restaurant

The City Council recently examined plans for a new restaurant at the sports center, which is currently undergoing a major expansion.

Want to sit down at the Bielenberg Sports Center and have a bloody Mary on a weekend morning? The Woodbury City Council examined Wednesday plans for a new restaurant as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project, and alcohol sales were big part of the discussion. Greg Gartner, whose company is heading up food service at the new facility, said he plans to apply for a full liquor license. Related: New Restaurant at Bielenberg: Woodbury Council Gets First Look Councilwoman Julie Ohs expressed concerns about having alcohol sales at a facility where children are the primary patrons. “It gets a little tricky,” she said. Gartner said there would be some sort of divider, possibly a railing, keeping the restaurant area separate from …

Motorcyclist Hospitalized Following Crash on Radio Drive in Woodbury

The other motorist was cited for inattentive driving.

A St. Paul motorcyclist was hospitalized Thursday after two-vehicle crash along Radio Drive in Woodbury. The injuries to the 51-year-old were not considered life threatening, but he was transported to Regions Hospital, said Michelle Okada, Woodbury Public Safety spokeswoman. The incident happened at about 4 p.m. at Donegal Drive, near King of Kings Lutheran Church. Both the motorcyclist and driver of the other vehicle, a 25-year-old from Hugo, were traveling in the northbound lane, Okada said. The Hugo man failed to yield and the two vehicles collided, and the motorcyclist was thrown from the bike. He had abrasions and other injuries, Okada said. The Hugo man was cited for inattentive driving, she said. Witness called 911 about the crash…

Woodbury Roads Going to Pot Sooner Than Expected: ‘City Engineer’s Nightmare’

A blacktop mix used in the 1980s and ’90s is apparently where the problem lies, though the exact cause is unknown.

There is a “whole era of pavement” in Woodbury that is showing signs of distress sooner than city officials expected. The issue seems to be related to a blacktop mix used during the late 1980s into the ’90s, though Minnesota Department of Transportation research on the problem isn’t conclusive, said Klayton Eckles, city engineer for Woodbury. It was during the late 1980s that recycled materials began to be used in blacktop. “We believe there’s something in that mix design where it’s not lasting as long as the old mixes,” Eckles said. While it’s a statewide problem, the issue is more prevalent in Woodbury, where the core roads in the city—from Radio Drive to Woodbury Drive—were built during that timeframe, a period of rapid growth. This …

Be nice if they would finally start allowing the use of recycled tires in the building of our roads. They've been doing it in Europe, mainly Germany, for decades. When temperatures go from freezing to blistering, roads expand and contract, causing all these problems. With the addition of ground tires in the mix, this expansion and contraction happens without the roads cracking up. Wouldn't it be …   more ›

Retiring at 50: Could You Follow This Woman's Extreme Savings Plan?

Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.

Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts.  But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free.  Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not …

Woodbury Punch Pizza Update: Opening Date Pushed Back

The new pizza shop is going in at Woodbury’s City Centre.

Construction at the site of a new Punch Pizza in Woodbury is expected to begin in the next week or so. The original opening date was slated for late June or early July, but the company is now shooting for early September. The process “to get everything worked out with the site” took longer than anticipated, according to Jenny Nyquist, senior manager. “But we are excited to finally get construction started,” she told Patch. Punch Pizza also had to provide the city with additional information on how its wood-fire ovens work, she said. Punch’s Neapolitan pizzas cook in an 800-degree wood-fire oven and come out in 90 seconds. It will be located in the same building as FedEx/Kinkos at the northwest corner of Radio Drive and Valley Creek Road. …

New Restaurant at Bielenberg: Woodbury Council Gets First Look

The restaurant is part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday examined plans for a new restaurant at the Bielenberg Sports Center. Gartner Restaurant Holdings has been selected to handle food service at the new complex, which is currently under construction. A restaurant would be built on the second floor of the new lobby, and Gartner Restaurant Holdings would also run a snack bar on the first floor. Greg Gartner said his company has experience providing food service at other sports facilities and the concept for the Woodbury space was partially inspired by restaurants at the Xcel Energy Center. Other municipal sports facilities are including restaurants, said Bob Klatt, Woodbury Parks and Recreation director. “The trend is going that way,” he said. The plans …

The structure, at Marsh Creek Park, is open for tours during the summer.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday took a tour of the Woodbury Heritage Society’s Heritage House. For those who want to tour the house themselves, the Woodbury Heritage Society offers free tours the second and fourth Sundays of the month from June through September. The tours run from 1-4 p.m., and a member of the organization is on hand to answer questions and talk about the house and grounds. The Heritage House is located at Marsh Creek Park.
