Woodbury Council Mulls Alcohol for Bielenberg Sports Center Restaurant

The City Council recently examined plans for a new restaurant at the sports center, which is currently undergoing a major expansion.

Want to sit down at the Bielenberg Sports Center and have a bloody Mary on a weekend morning? The Woodbury City Council examined Wednesday plans for a new restaurant as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project, and alcohol sales were big part of the discussion. Greg Gartner, whose company is heading up food service at the new facility, said he plans to apply for a full liquor license. Related: New Restaurant at Bielenberg: Woodbury Council Gets First Look Councilwoman Julie Ohs expressed concerns about having alcohol sales at a facility where children are the primary patrons. “It gets a little tricky,” she said. Gartner said there would be some sort of divider, possibly a railing, keeping the restaurant area separate from …

Woodbury Council Makes Informal Decision on Splash Pad

The water feature has been considered as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion plans.

Woodbury seems ready to move ahead with plans for a splash pad at the Bielenberg Sports Center. The City Council took an informal poll about the water feature during Wednesday night’s workshop meeting. No formal action was taken, but it seems as though the splash pad has the votes to pass when it comes before the council later. The splash pad has long been considered as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. It would be sited north of where the Madison’s Place playground is going to be built, adjacent to where the new field house is being built. Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens said she supports the plan, and a splash pad would be a “good use” of park-dedication funds, which would pay for the water feature. (Estimates have put…

I'm just tired of paying for everybody's entertainment. You want a pool, pay for a pool. I have access to a pool, I pay for it. Why should I also pay for your pool, splash pad, etc. Sounds like wasteful spending to me. Once Eagle Valley Golf Course starts letting me golf for free, then we can consider a free pool.   more ›

Woodbury Skate Park Celebration Planned for this Weekend

A daylong series of skating events is scheduled at the facility at Ojibway Park in Woodbury.

Woodbury installed new equipment at the skate plaza at Ojibway Park last October. So far this spring, it’s been popular. “It’s been packed every day there hasn’t been snow on it,” said Reed Smidt, Woodbury recreation specialist. A celebration of the skate park is set for Saturday, May 18. The event begins at 10 a.m. and will run into the evening, Smidt said. The day kicks off with the opener for the 3rd Lair Summer Series Competition. “It’s the Little League of skateboarding,” Smidt said. The series is held at several locations across the Twin Cities each summer, and Woodbury is hosting the first event this year, Smidt said. The day continues with several other activities, including: The event is open to everyone and is free to attend, …

Helicopters in Woodbury Likely Related to Mosquitoes

The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District’s choppers do not spray insecticide to control adult mosquitoes.

The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District on Tuesday, May 14, planned to send its helicopters over Woodbury to conduct treatments to control mosquito larvae. “Helicopters apply a dry granule or pellet containing a natural soil bacterium or a mosquito growth regulator to wetlands to prevent larval mosquitoes from becoming biting adults,” reads a notice on the MMCD website. “These are biorational control materials which specifically target mosquito larvae and pose no risk to human or animal health.” MMCD helicopters do not spray insecticides to control adult mosquitoes, according to its website.   Like Patch on Facebook | Follow us on Twitter | Sign up for our free newsletter

Woodbury Council to Discuss Restaurant at Bielenberg Sports Center

The new restaurant is part of the expansion project currently underway.

The company chosen to provide food service at the expanded Bielenberg Sports Center envisions a full-scale restaurant on the second floor of the lobby. The proposal is part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. Plans call for a new field house, two-story lobby, outdoor rink and improvements to the existing ice arenas, which will remain in place. Construction is underway. The Woodbury City Council during a workshop meeting Wednesday, May 15, is expected to examine the concept for the new restaurant and concession area. The proposal from Gartner Restaurant Holdings features a “full-service restaurant on the second floor, a concession stand on the first floor and food service carts and potential service in the surrounding fields…

I thought the National Sports Center in Blaine served. I could be wrong though. I remember it coming up when the city was considering asking a question about alcohol at Bielenberg as part of the biannual survey.   more ›

Woodbury Man Makes Plea for Splash Pad

Michael Litgen spoke during Wednesday night’s Woodbury City Council meeting.

It’s just a matter of when, according to Michael Litgen. “A splash pad is coming to Woodbury,” he said. Litgen spoke during the open forum portion of Wednesday night’s Woodbury City Council meeting, urging the city to install the water feature as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion plans. The city has been considering the splash pad as it moves forward with the $21.8 million project, which includes a new field house, two-story lobby and outdoor rink, among other updates. An all-inclusive playground, Madison's Place, is also planned at the site. Litgen said a splash pad would improve the overall project, comparing it to the way the Lookout Ridge indoor playground enhances the city’s Central Park facility. “This adds to the …

Soccer Shots Partners With Woodbury Preschools

The company looks to promote healthy lifestyles among youth and provide an extracurricular activity for schools.

A new youth soccer franchise has partnered with four Woodbury preschools in attempt to bring an extracurricular activity to the schools and introduce the game to children. Soccer Shots is working with Primrose School of Woodbury, Saint Ambrose, Woodbury Preschool Programs on Steepleview and Woodbury Lutheran for summer programs, said Dan Larson, owner of the local franchise. Soccer shots works with kids 2-8 years old during once-a-week 30-minute sessions, he said. In addition to teaching the basics of the sport, the company tries to “use soccer as a vehicle to teach healthy habits to kids,” Larson said. “And it’s a way for the school to offer an extracurricular that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to,” he said. Summer camps at Woodbury …

Demolition Work at Woodbury's Bielenberg Sports Center

The construction is the latest step toward a new $21.8 million facility.

Site grading, pond draining and lobby demolition at the Bielenberg Sports Center took place Tuesday, May 7. The work marks the latest phase in Woodbury's $21.8 million BSC expansion project, which calls for a new field house, two-story lobby, plaza and outdoor rink, along with other upgrades. The existing ice arenas will remain (but see improvements), and people are asked to enter through the west rink doors. Bielenberg staff is operating out of the skate-sharpening area, according to this week's report from the city administrator. Woodbury marked the construction with a dome-deflation ceremony last month, though the bubble had to be briefly re-inflated due to weather. The expected opening date for the new facility is the first quarter of …

Woodbury Football ‘Gears Up’ for Garage Sale

The football team is participating in this year’s Woodbury Lions Community Garage Sale for the first time as part of an effort to raise funds for the program.

The Woodbury High School football team is hosting a garage sale as a way to raise money for “everything from coaching to equipment to socks,” says Julie Bunch, who helps with promotions. “It’s just something new we’re trying this year,” she said. Team members and parents have been working to get things ready for the Woodbury Lions Community Garage Sale, which runs May 9-11. The football team is holding its sale at 1592 Tamberwood Trail: As might be expected, there’s a good deal of sports equipment that will be available at the sale, along with typical items such as antiques, household goods and electronics, Bunch said. It was nice to see the response from the community as the garage sale was being organized, she said. “We had somebody call…

Should Minnesotans Do More to Support Cycling?

The state dropped two spots in the League of American Bicyclists’ annual rankings.

(Editor's Note: The map above was created by the League of American Bicyclists.)  Minnesota is still among the top states in “bike friendliness,” but its ranking fell a couple notches in 2013, according to the League of American Bicyclists. The state was ranked fourth this year, down from second in 2012. It ranked high in legislation and enforcement, policies and programs and education and encouragement. But it was middle of the pack in infrastructure and funding and lower tier in evaluation and planning. Minnesota was also missing three of the league’s “Top 10 Signs of Success: Use the map above to see how Minnesota compares to other states in the various categories. Do you think Minnesota needs to do more to support cycling? Share your …
