A Sense of Place: 10 Years for Woodbury’s Central Park

A decade ago, a group of residents wanted to create a community gathering place in Woodbury. Today, the Central Park facility functions as the hub of the city. It was a unique concept 10 years ago, said Cheryl Hurst, a Woodbury City Council member at the time who championed efforts to get it built. “They knew that we didn’t have a downtown, per se,” said Hurst, who now lives in Florida. “So it was trying to meet the needs of the community—to have a sense of place in the heart of Woodbury.” On Saturday, Nov. 17, the city will mark the 10-year anniversary of Central Park. Washington County will also celebrate the anniversary of the R.H. Stafford Branch Library, named in honor of late County Commissioner Dick Stafford.        Related: Central…

Snapshot: 10 Years Apart at a Woodbury Business

As Sam's Club celebrated its 10-year anniversary this week, here are photos of a local family at the same spot a decade apart.

Ten years ago, the La Casse family was at the grand opening for the Woodbury Sam’s Club. Sam’s Club celebrated its 10th anniversary this week, and the family was there again. Amelia La Casse took a photo of her kids back then, and she took another one this week—with one new addition to the family. How Did Sam’s Club Influence Retail Development Along Woodbury Drive?

The wholesaler, which celebrated its 10th anniversary Thursday, made the area more attractive to other retailers, city official says.

The Woodbury Sam’s Club celebrated its 10-year anniversary in the city on Thursday. But its inception meant more than just a place to get groceries in bulk. “It definitely provided an anchor for the area,” said Eric Searles, associate planner with Woodbury, whose work with the city coincided with the Sam’s Club opening a decade ago. The opening of Sam’s Club was about the same time the CityWalk development began to come online, Searles said, when the current area near Walmart was an outlet mall. The wholesaler’s opening made the business climate in the area more attractive for additional retailers—most notably the Commerce Hill parcel, which saw a new SuperTarget open up. “Sam’s Club certainly increased the amount of traffic for that area…
