There have been a variety of calls recently at the area of Hudson Road and Century Avenue.
Woodbury police and city officials on Thursday morning gathered near the intersection of Hudson Road and Century Avenue. There wasn’t a particular incident to which they were responding. But the city has seen a spike in calls of late to that area, everything from traffic accidents to break-ins, said Michelle Okada, Woodbury police spokeswoman. “It’s been a variety of things,” she said. City officials and public safety personnel were out during rush hour Thursday morning to get a sense of traffic patterns in the area, Okada said. Unlike previous snowstorms that hit the city this season, there were only a handful of incidents Tuesday morning.
Maybe folks have simply learned how to drive in the snow. Between 6 a.m. and mid-afternoon Tuesday, March 5, there were only five crashes in Woodbury, none with major injuries or significant damage to the vehicles involved. “Which for this kind of storm is not bad,” according to Woodbury Police spokeswoman Michelle Okada. She’s not exaggerating. More than 30 crashes were reported in Woodbury by mid-morning on Nov. 12, 2012, when the city saw its first major snowfall of the season. The Dec. 9, 2012, storm, which dumped almost a foot of snow on Woodbury, saw several incidents on the roads, and it was the “same story” 11 days later, when there were a dozen crashes in the city by 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 20. Schools were closed, plows were out and snow was still falling Tuesday morning in Woodbury. The city had been under a winter storm advisory from the National Weather Service, and snow was steady at about 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 5. Classes were canceled Tuesday in District 833, and several other schools in Woodbury were closed. The Math and Science Academy was closed. A notice from South Washington County Schools: South Washington County Schools will be closed today. All morning activities (including Kids Club) are closed today. There were a dozen incidents on the roads by 9:30 a.m. following the snowfall.
Between crashes and vehicles going off the road, there were about a dozen incidents in Woodbury as of 9:30 a.m. Thursday. “Same story, as always,” said Woodbury traffic officer Scott Melander. “People driving too fast for the conditions.” Speed limits are set for dry, sunny days, he said, and motorists simply need to slow down. Fortunately, there were no injuries associated with the incidents, Melander said. Woodbury saw a couple of inches of snow during the overnight hours of Wednesday and Thursday, and snow was still falling this morning. There were several incidents on the roads and plenty of calls to public works following the storm that dumped about a foot of snow on Woodbury. No one was seriously injured in any of the crashes, most of which were vehicles going off the road or feder-benders, said Woodbury traffic officer Scott Melander. “If residents would slow down it wouldn’t be so bad driving right now,” he said. Interstate 94 was icy, with slow going for commuters Monday morning, while city roads were “in OK condition,” Melander said. There were no serious injuries reported Monday morning.
More than 30 crashes were reported in Woodbury as of 10:20 a.m. Monday morning as the city saw the first significant snowfall of the season. No one was hospitalized as a result of the crashes, said Woodbury traffic officer Scott Melander. Often, motorists were sliding through stop signs or traffic lights, Melander said. Reports started coming in at about 8 a.m. and Woodbury police had received at least three dozen calls. “It’s been a busy morning,” Melander said. The Woodlane Drive hill at Valley Creek Road was too icy to drive up at one point this morning, but city crews were out salting the roads, Melander said, and that street is now drivable. “Drivers need to realize that they do need to slow down and drive for the conditions,” he said…
