Washington County Commissioners Butt Heads on Out-of-State Travel

Commissioners who argued that three board members don't need to go to a Portland, OR, conference were outvoted.

Two Washington County commissioners who questioned the timing of sending three commissioners to an out-of-state conference in July were outvoted Tuesday, following a heated discussion. Commissioners Lisa Weik and Gary Kriesel said only two board members should attend the National Association of Counties' Portland, OR, conference to cut costs and prevent having to cancel the July 19 board meeting due to lack of a quorum. With an impending state government shutdown and tight budgets, they argued it’s bad timing to cancel the meeting and spend money unnecessarily. “Just because we’ve budgeted something doesn’t mean we need to spend it,” said Weik, who represents most of Woodbury. It is very easy to offer comments, but to actually put yourself on the line, as has both Ms. Lehrke and her husband have done, your points seem quite mute and without any substance. Blotter: Snowmobiles Stolen; Coyote Spotted Twice

Elsewhere in Woodbury, a car and television were stolen from a home on Eagle Trace Lane.

The following information was obtained from recent police reports. Woodbury police were called to the PDQ gas station on Weir Drive on Jan. 6 on a report of a gas drive-off. Police were called to East Ridge High School on Jan. 7 on a report that a cell phone valued at $50 had been stolen. Two snowmobiles and a trailer were reported stolen from a home at the 3000 block of White Oaks Lane on Jan. 7. One of the snowmobiles was valued at $1,300, the other at $2,500. The trailer was valued at $6,000. The owner and neighbors had seen a gold Ford Taurus not usually seen in the neighborhood parked nearby in the days before the theft. A laptop computer issued to a 3M employee was stolen from a vehicle parked at Throwbacks Grille & Bar on Jan. 7. …
