From Students to Business Leaders, Economy the Focus as U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum Visits Woodbury

She spoke with Patch at the Sheraton Hotel following a meeting with the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce.

Whether she was talking to students or local business leaders, one theme emerged Friday during U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum’s trip through Woodbury. People are still concerned about the economy. “That came across loud and clear,” said McCollum, who was in Stillwater on Thursday. On Friday, McCollum, a Democrat from St. Paul who now represents Woodbury in the newly redrawn 4th Congressional District, visited Woodbury High School, Aveka, Inc., and the Sheraton Hotel, where she met with members of the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce. Business owners she talked to say they feel the economy is rebounding, “but it’s still very fragile,” McCollum said. Woodbury Wisdom Heads To Outer Space

Aveka, a local research and development company, helped a student in the Chicago area get a science experiment on the space shuttle.

Microencapsulation. You might not know what it means. But a sixth-grade student in the Chicago area sure does, thanks to the help of Woodbury-based Aveka, Inc. A few months ago, Brandon Gligor, an 11-year-old student in Lincolnwood, Ill., was looking to create a science project that would go up with the recent space shuttle launch. His teacher called 17 companies and universities seeking information on microencapsulation, a process that encases particles. She finally reached out to Aveka and got in touch with Willie Hendrickson, its CEO and founder. Hendrickson was willing to help.
