Back to School Excitement at Woodbury’s Liberty Ridge Elementary

If you have photos from the first day of school, add them to this post.

There were smiles and cries and at least one cartwheel. Students headed back to school Tuesday morning at Liberty Ridge Elementary and across the district. While Liberty Ridge Principal Mike Moore said he’s excited for Day 1, he also noted that getting students calmed down and ready to learn is a big part of the plan. “We’ve got to slow down in order to go fast,” he said. Getting kids acclimated to school procedure is especially important at Liberty Ridge, where a growing student population means faculty will be busy meeting the needs of 969 youngsters, Moore said. Outside the school Tuesday morning making sure student drop-off was going smoothly, Moore said it's fun to see everyone again and meet new students. "We're looking forward to a …

Second Guessing School Choice in Woodbury

I’m pretty sure that when I was a kid and my mom put me on the bus, she had no idea where I ended up.

It’s back to school and most Woodbury parents are breathing a collective sigh: the return to routine. For some parents, it’s an agonizing day of, is my child going to be OK? Will she make new friends? Will the teachers understand that little Toby has to sharpen his pencil each time he writes a capital letter? Could my son’s dorm room have bed bugs? Every year of big change can bring about fatalistic pondering. Wondering, did I make the right choice for my child? Choice is supposed to be a good thing. It’s what we love about grocery stores, shopping malls and cable news channels. But choice, when it comes to education, can seem daunting. I remember excruciating deliberations about whether to choose public school or private school, all-day …

Woodbury’s Back To School Blues

Looking back at summer, preparing for the new world ahead.

Today, the children of District 833 are back in school! Summer limped into existence during a cold, rainy June. The heat cranked up with smothering July temps. Then August arrived to produce a level of anxiety in me that today should resolve itself. Most parents fall into one of two camps. The first group is exhausted. Their patience is worn thin by summer’s end. They’re eager for September’s routine to refocus their bored, crabby kids. Although I understand this first group, I fall into a second group. I know what weather Minnesota has in store for me in the coming months. I even imagine Old Man Winter himself driving the school bus. I’ve tried every August to dig in my heels and resist the change of seasons, to no avail. Today summer is …

Students Look Away: Woodbury High School Announces Back-To-School Events

From parking permits to freshman orientation, Woodbury is working to keep students in the loop.

Students at Woodbury High School are probably more concerned with their next trip to the beach than back-to-school events. That didn’t stop the high school from sending out an announcement about a series of back-to-school events coming up this summer. Students who drive to school will need a parking permit. Woodbury High School requires each student who wishes to purchase a parking permit to attend a 20-minute orientation session.  These orientation sessions will be held hourly from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following days in the school’s Lecture Hall.  A videotaped copy of the session will be available in the attendance office throughout the school year for any student who wishes to purchase a permit once school has begun or who is unable …
